It's-a Mario Day! Celebrating the world's favorite plumber

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- Mar 10 isn't just another day; it's National Mario Day, a celebration of the world's most famous pixelated plumber. Since his first appearance in 1981's Donkey Kong, Mario has been jumping, stomping, and rescuing princesses for over 40 years. Whether players first met him in an 8-bit world or are racing him down Rainbow Road today, one thing is certain: Mario isn't just a game; he's a legend. Before he was the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario had a different gig. He started out as a Jumpman in Donkey Kong, battling a very grumpy gorilla to rescue his girlfriend. Two years later, Nintendo rebranded him, swapping out his carpenter's overalls for a plumber's toolkit, giving him a brother named Luigi, and launching him into a new adventure. Since then, Mario has been everywhere, starring in classic side-scrollers, sports games, RPGs, and even space-themed adventures. Whether dodging Bob bombs, throwing bananas at Bowser, or making a splash in last year's Super Mario Bros. movie, Mario remains one of the most recognizable and beloved characters in gaming history. To see just how popular Mario still is, we spoke with Tony Sanders, owner of Retro Hall & Funko Mood, a local gaming store dedicated to nostalgia. If anyone thinks Mario is just for longtime gamers, Sanders says that's far from the truth. 'We can't even keep Mario games in stock,' Sanders said. 'Kids today love Mario just as much as people in their 60s who grew up with him.' That blend of nostalgia and accessibility is what keeps Mario at the top of the gaming charts. With over 210 million copies of Mario games sold, his legacy remains unmatched. When it comes to the most sought-after Mario games, Sanders didn't hesitate. Super Mario Bros. 3 – 'A love-hate relationship, but it's a classic.' Paper Mario – A fan-favorite, story-driven adventure. Super Mario 64 – The game that defined 3D platforming. One exception? Mario Paint. 'That one's a little different…people don't always want to track down the mouse pad,' Sanders said with a laugh. Over the decades, Mario has evolved with updated graphics, new gameplay mechanics, and even a voice in later games. 'I'm glad they finally gave him a voice,' Sanders said. 'That was kind of neat.' But will Mario still be a household name 20 or 30 years from now? 'Absolutely,' Sanders said. 'They could remaster one or two, but Mario's never going away.' National Mario Day isn't just about a video game- it's about the memories players have made along the way. Whether it was leaving an NES on overnight because there were no save points, battling siblings for controller time, or discovering Mario for the first time in a modern remake, the joy remains the same. Mario isn't just a character: he's an era, a tradition, and an adventure that continues to grow with every generation. So, on March 10, grab a controller, dust off an old console, or fire up the latest Mario game because some things never go out of style. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Want to get the latest tea or news on what's trending on social media? Tune in daily! NY Strip Steak could soon be called the TX Strip All steak lovers, or New York Strip lovers, could soon face the small challenge of no longer calling it that but its new name: the Texas Strip. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has mentioned he will change the name of the popular steak cut. While proposing the renaming of the steak cut is well within their rights, a New York steakhouse is planning on suing the state of Texas for $1 million. According to the Austin Eater, the steakhouse alleges that the rebranding of the New York strip 'infringes upon New York's cultural heritage and poses economic harm to businesses that rely on the recognition and popularity of the New York strip steak.' National Mario Day! March 10 is an exciting day for all Mario Bros. lovers and fanatics. The Italian plumber, once known as a carpenter named Jumpman, continues to be a top favorite in the video game world. Let's-a go! March 10 is National Mario Day, celebrating Nintendo's iconic game character

Wahoo! March 10 is National Mario Day, which honors one of the most iconic video game characters ever created… Mario. The date, when written as 'Mar10,' kind of resembles the name 'Mario' (see it?) — making it an oh-so-fitting day to honor everyone's most favorite plumber. And that's the whole goal of National Mario Day — to celebrate the enduring legacy of this character – who over the years has brought joy to millions worldwide. Mario is the creation of video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, and he made his first appearance in 1981 as 'Jumpman' in the Nintendo arcade game Donkey Kong, which you can see below. We played this game in a lot of Pizza Huts in the 1980s. Mario quickly became Nintendo's mascot, 'starring' in games like Super Mario Bros. (versions 1-4!), Mario Paint, and Super Mario Kart. Over the years, Mario introduced us to other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom, like his brother Luigi, Princess Peach, and his adorable dinosaur Yoshi. (We're leaving Wario off this list on purpose, and we hope it hurts his feelings. He knows why.) Looking for some ways to honor Mario today? Here are some ideas to get you started. Play a few Mario games. If you still have your old consoles, Revisit classic titles like Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart, or explore newer releases on the Nintendo Switch. Even better, treat yourself to something new – like some Mario-inspired LEGOs, and more. Throw a Mario-themed party. Decorate your home in red and blue, dress up as Mario, Luigi or even Princess Peach (really anyone from the Mushroom Kingdom will do, just not Wario!), and organize game tournaments. Who is really the Mario Kart champion of your family? Create some Mario-inspired crafts and treats. You could bake Infinity star-shaped cookies, draw your own varieties of magic mushrooms, or build some landscapes with building blocks. Share your favorite Mario memories – and your highest scores, perhaps? – on social media using the hashtag #NationalMarioDay. Regardless of whether you're a lifelong fan or a Nintendo newbie, March 10th is the perfect day to celebrate all things Mario. Let's-a-go!
