East, South Side residents remember slain Livingston Market owner as pillar of community

Jehad Alzaben, who was fatally shot May 25 in his Columbus convenience store, was described by one person who has known him for years as "a family man who took care of the neighborhood." "He blessed the neighborhood," said Keisha Bates, who owned a business next door to Alzaben in the Driving Park neighborhood and has known Alzaben since he came from Jordan decades ago. "You know how sometimes people don't have enough money to get something? (He would say) 'Don't worry about it.' Or if you needed milk for your baby and you didn't have it, 'Go ahead, take that can,'" Bates said. Dozens of people from the Driving Park neighborhood, other parts of the Near East Side and the South Side showed up May 26 for a candlelight vigil outside Alazaben's Livingston Market at 1619 E. Livingston Ave. near Seymour Avenue to memorialize him. According to Columbus police, officers responded around 11:45 p.m. on May 25 to Alzeban's market on reports of gunshots. When police arrived, they found Alzeban suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 12:30 a.m. on May 26. Bates said the vigil for Alzeban brought out "the whole South Side and most of the East Side." "And the people driving through were beeping their horns and stopping the car — stopping traffic," Bates said. "If you come from this area, you know Jehad from somewhere." Alzaben ran and owned the Livingston Market for 28 years. When Bates owned a hair salon next door to his store, she said they worked together to keep the block safe and free from drug dealing. "People used to think they were going to sell drugs and everything like that," Bates said. "Not here you weren't." She said the killing didn't make any sense to her. "It was very, very senseless, and they don't even realize what they did to our community," Bates said. "They really don't. He was such a good person." On Facebook, the Livingston Area Merchants Association said Alzaben was "a beloved Livingston Avenue business owner, neighbor, and friend." In addition to his random acts of kindness at his store, he also supported the community by donating to youth sports, National Night Out and local organizations. Columbus police homicide detectives continue to investigate the killing and to determine a motive. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Columbus police Detective Brandt at (614) 645-4077, the Homicide Unit at (614) 645-4730, or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at (614) 461-TIPS (8477). What to know for National Night Out 2025

TOPEKA (KSNT) — Heading into summer, the City of Topeka is making preparations for a community favorite event of the season: National Night Out. With the city now responsible for hosting the main National Night Out event later this year, it hopes more people can help make it a community-wide success. Neighbors within each Topeka community are encouraged to host their own National Night Out events. Interested members got the details Friday at an informational session. Lake Shawnee safe to enter as algae warning subsides 'This year's going to be a little different because it's going to be run differently,' Ward Meade neighbor Denise Petet said. 'Have a few more challenges but we're also hopeful that some of our great sponsors in the past will be able to help us out again this year.' Even though the organizer has changed, the purpose of National Night Out remains the same: bring neighbors together and connect them with local first responders, like Topeka Fire and Police. 'The City of Topeka is a great diversity, we recognize that and embrace that,' Community Police Unit Sgt. Mike Burns said. 'Your Topeka Police Department wants to go out to every part of the city and have those communications and dialogues with people. We want to know what are the priorities of different parts of the town.' Opening that channel of communication gives those officers greater insight into the unique challenges present in each neighborhood. Topeka store owner takes steps to protect local landfills, trash trucks with vape disposal service 'Are you having problems with lifestyle issues, such as loud music?' Burns said. 'Or are you having a lot of traffic in and out at certain parts of time, are you having violent crime in your parts of town, are you having some theft issues?' The city is offering resources such as first responder availability, up to a $200 stipend for event expenses, and activity ideas to bring people together. 'When you know who your neighbors are, you know what's normal, you know what's not normal,' Petet said. 'It helps you keep an eye on what's going on in your neighborhood.' If you were not able to attend the informational sessions, but still want to put on the National Night Out for your neighborhood, the City of Topeka will upload the video from Friday's meeting on Tuesday. What's happening in Topeka this Memorial Day weekend? The application deadline is set for July 3, with the National Night Out itself happening in August. For more local news, click here. La Vergne Police Department adds BearCat tactical vehicle to its fleet

LA VERGNE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A new tactical vehicle will join the La Vergne Police Department's fleet. The BearCat is a tactical vehicle meant to help protect La Vergne officers and focus on public safety. Authorities said the new tactical vehicle would provide the SWAT team the ability to stay safe on particularly dangerous calls by providing mobile protection. Neighborhood News: Stories impacting your community | Read More Additionally, the BearCat provides the community with reassurance and confidence to show that La Vergne is committed to getting the job done regardless of situations that arise. 'Just the presence of a BearCat — it's an imposing vehicle,' La Vergne Police Chief, Christopher Moewes, said. 'The sight of it on somebody's street can actually be a deterrent to people raising a level of force against our officers or against members of the public.' Moewes said the department has been in the process of trying to get the BearCat added to its fleet since September 2023, but ran into a supply chain issue. He said that about two-thirds of the cost of the tactical equipment was covered by a federal grant the department received. Moewes added that while crime in La Vergne fluctuates, the new BearCat could be useful for certain situations. For example, Moewes described an incident where La Vergne officers had to respond to a subject who had fired multiple rounds in the air. ⏩ 'If we had had this vehicle, it would have provided greater safety for my officers and for the community,' Moewes told News 2. The La Vergne Police Department will perform a live demonstration of the BearCat's capabilities — as well as SWAT and K-9 officer capabilities — at this year's National Night Out, which is on October 7 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. Wapakoneta Walmart celebrates 20 years

Apr. 11—WAPAKONETA — It all began in 2005 when Walmart, 1257 Bellefonatine Ave., Wapakoneta, opened its doors to the community. Two decades later, the store manager, employees and community celebrated a significant milestone during an event Friday at the store. "It means so much to me and to have all the associates that have been with us for 20 years and to be in this community," store manager Gerry Goulet said in an interview. Goulet began as a store manager in Lima and relocated multiple times, including to Cleveland and Mansfield, before finding his way back home. It all lined up for Goulet to return to his stomping grounds. "My wife's from Waynesfield, I graduated from Bath up in Lima, so it was a perfect fit for us to come back and be close with family again," Goulet said. Goulet's favorite part about his job is working with the associates. "We have 257 associates in the store right now and they're just good people to work with," he said. "They really do take care of each other." Wapakoneta Mayor Daniel Lee celebrated the many employees in attendance during Friday's celebration. "I'd like to thank you for all that you do for all your hard work," Lee said, "making sure the shelves are stacked and making sure the floors are clean." Lee's favorite memories of Walmart include the community showing up for Black Friday shopping. "It wasn't neccesairily about the deal; it was about the community," Lee said. "We need these third spaces that we can come together and see people." Throughout its two decades in operation, the Wapakoneta Walmart store has prioritized giving back to the community. "Just through grants, we've been able to give $175,000 (since opening)," Goulet said. Walmart has also participated in Fight Hunger by donating meals with the West Ohio Food Bank. "I can only go back 10 years, but we've been able to help donate 662,000 pounds of food. That's 57,000 meals," Goulet said. The store also announced a $3,000 donation to the Wapakoneta Police Department for its annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, Aug. 5. Reach Cade Higgins at 567-242-0351 Featured Local Savings
