Mavericks reportedly have workout set with Cooper Flagg ahead of NBA Draft

The Dallas Mavericks now have a workout set with Cooper Flagg. The Mavericks have a scheduled private visit for the former Duke star on June 17, according to ESPN's Shams Charania and Jonathan Givony. Dallas, which owns the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft later this month, does not plan to work out any other prospects before the draft. Flagg isn't planning any additional visits, either, and 'both sides are aligned on his arrival' in Dallas, per the report. Advertisement While things can still change between now and the NBA Draft on June 25, all signs continue to point toward the Mavericks selecting Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick. The Mavericks, just months after trading away superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, won the NBA Draft lottery for the first time in franchise history this spring. They had just a 1.8% chance to win the lottery. Flagg has long been considered the clear favorite to go No. 1 in the draft this summer. The 18-year-old, who was one of the most coveted prospects in college basketball history, averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists with the Blue Devils last season while helping them reach the Final Four. The Blue Devils dominated in the ACC, where they went 19-1, and Flagg was the consensus National Player of the Year. Advertisement While the Mavericks were thrust into turmoil after the Dončić trade — the fan base immediately turned on general manager Nico Harrison after the deal, repeatedly and loudly calling for his ousting — Flagg will get to step into a roster alongside Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving, who is recovering from an ACL injury. The Mavericks, who reached the NBA Finals in 2024, went just 39-43 last season and finished in 10th in the Western Conference standings.

Grizzlies' Zach Edey undergoes surgery, could miss start of 2025-26 season

Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey has sprained his left ankle again, and the team said Saturday that the All-Rookie team selection will need surgery. The Grizzlies said the 7-foot-3 Edey was working out this week when he injured the ankle again. Imaging revealed excessive ligamentous laxity, which will be addressed with surgery that will also restabilize his ankle. The two-time National Player of the Year at Purdue missed 12 games early in the season because of a sprained left ankle. He went on to play in 66 games, making 55 starts, and averaged 9.2 points and a rookie-leading 8.3 rebounds. The Grizzlies said a preliminary timeline for recovery will be provided after surgery and that Edey is expected to make a full recovery. Reporting by The Associated Press. Texas vs Texas Tech softball lookback: How WCWS finalists fared in regular season

Texas vs Texas Tech softball lookback: How WCWS finalists fared in regular season Show Caption Hide Caption Why Texas Tech, Texas will win 2025 WCWS It's a Lone Star State Women's College World Series this year, and reporter Jenni Carlson breaks down one reason Texas Tech will win and one reason Texas will win the WCWS. When Texas and Texas Tech likely deploy ace pitchers Teagan Kavan and NiJaree Canady on June 4 for Game 1 of the national championship series, it won't be the first time either arm has faced off this season. Kavan and Canady, who have led the Longhorns and Red Raiders, respectively, to undefeated showings at the Women's College World Series this season, met early in the regular season. Texas got the best of Texas Tech in both of their meetings, coming away with a 2-1 win and an 11-0 run-rule two days later. Kavan and Canady have been paramount to their teams' success in the postseason: Kavan has allowed two runs in 17 innings at the WCWS, whereas Canady has surrendered three in 21 innings. Both programs are looking for their first national championship in program history in 2025, and their early season-matchup proved to be a preview of the title series nearly four months later. Here's a look back at Texas and Texas Tech's regular season matchups in February: Texas vs Texas Tech regular season matchups Texas and Texas Tech's first of two matchups during the regular season was quite the pitchers' duel, as the Longhorns needed nine innings to come away with a 2-1 win. Kavan and Canady both pitched complete games in the extra-innings duel on Feb. 14, with Kavan edging out Canady behind perhaps the best performance of her college career so far. Kavan tossed nine innings with a whopping 18 strikeouts, allowing one run on four hits against the Red Raiders lineup. Nine of her 18 strikeouts came against Texas Tech's 1-2-3 hitters of Mihyia Davis, Alana Johnson and Lauren Allred, who have all been huge contributors during the Red Raiders' postseason run. Canady, meanwhile, pitched eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with 11 strikeouts. Texas walked off Canady and Texas Tech in the ninth inning after Joley Mitchell and Leighann Goode led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Mitchell scored the game-winning run on a fielder's choice and a throwing error later in the frame. Texas Tech took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a single by Anya German, before Texas tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning on a double from Mia Scott. Two days later on Feb. 16, Texas defeated Texas Tech 11-0 in five innings, although Canady didn't pitch in the game. Canady has pitched nearly every inning in the postseason, including every pitch from the super regionals onward. It doesn't seem like the former National Player of the Year is going to let anyone else pitch in the national championship series.

UNC golfer and National Player of the Year earns PGA Tour Card

UNC golfer and National Player of the Year earns PGA Tour Card UNC adds another name to the PGA Tour roster this week as David Ford received his PGA TOUR Card on Tuesday. Ford will join Davis Love III, Tom Scherrer, Mark Wilson, and Pat Moore as Tar Heel representatives on the Tour. Ford has been a dynamic golfer for most of his life, winning the Junior Players Championship and Rolex Tournament of Champions before even joining the Tar Heel family. Once he arrived at college, Ford was an instant success. In his first year, he was the No. 1 player on the Rolex AJGA and Golfweek junior rankings, winning ACC Freshman of the Year in 2022, followed by ACC Player of the Year in 2023. He won the 2022 Southern Amateur and 2023 Jones Cup Invitational. He made his first PGA Tour start at the 2023 Barbasol Championship, where he even made the cut after the first two rounds. This season, Ford walked away with the Haskins Award as the NCAA National Player of the Year. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan had this to say: "Officially welcoming Luke, Gordon, and David to the PGA TOUR family marks the beginning of an exciting journey for three rising stars — and further underscores why this is the most competitive Tour in the world. PGA TOUR University is one of several direct pathways to the top of our sport, and we're committed to continuing to reward the highest achievers in college golf for years to come.' Ford certainly still has his best years to come and will get the opportunity to play in many PGA Tour events in the future. Earning his Tour Card now gives him a ticket to play on the highest level of professional golf in North America. The amateur is no longer an amateur; now, he is a professional and represents North Carolina proudly.
