March 20 is National Proposal Day, so say those 4 little words
National Proposal Day, celebrated annually on March 20th, is a special holiday designed to encourage people to ask: 'Will you marry me?' The idea for this holiday comes from an American, John Michael O'Loughlin, who noticed that many people — while they felt ready for marriage — struggled to find the right moment for a proposal. He chose March 20 for the holiday, the day of the spring equinox, as a symbol of new beginnings and balance in life. If you're considering popping the question, we're not going to give you any imaginative ideas. Sure, we could tell you to go for a scenic hike or a hot air balloon ride or a sunset walk on the beach, but – we both know that the most perfect proposal is going to be the one that comes from your heart. And that you already know what to do. So go do it. And — if you're not ready to propose to anyone, that's fine too! Everyone else can enjoy some of our most favorite proposals of all time. When it comes to cinematic, Miles Teller's 2018 proposal set the bar sky-high — literally. The actor popped the question at a scenic vista in the middle of a luxury safari in Africa. While on a morning outing with his now-wife Keleigh, Miles had their game guide secretly tie a single rose to a nearby tree. Romantic, right? Well, Keleigh saw the flower and assumed it was a memorial for someone who had passed. (Oops.) View this post on Instagram A post shared by @keleighteller But Miles quickly redirected the moment, revealing a handwritten note marking two special dates: the day they first became a couple (May 11, 2013) and the day he planned to change their relationship status forever. 'This is the day you became my girlfriend,' he told her, 'and today is the last day you wake up as my girlfriend.' Cue the collective aww! Best movie proposal: When Sandra Bullock begged Ryan Reynolds in 'The Proposal' Most rom-com proposals are grand and extravagant, heartfelt and sweet … this one was straight-up chaotic and maybe that's why we love it. In The Proposal (2009), Sandra Bullock's character, Margaret, goes from icy-cold boss to mildly desperate wannabe-fiancée in record time when she realizes she needs her assistant, Andrew (played by Ryan Reynolds). The setting? A bustling New York City street. The vibe? A complete mess. In a moment of sheer panic, Margaret literally drops to her knees on the sidewalk and rambles a proposal. Pedestrians gawk, Andrew is bewildered, and Margaret — normally composed and in control — looks like she's seconds away from passing out from embarrassment. It's unexpectedly sweet… and who wouldn't kneel on dirty city pavement to propose to Ryan Reynolds? Best viral proposal: When a Utah Jazz cheerleader didn't know the moves You have probably seen this beautiful plot twist of a proposal remixed a million times on social media — the classics are classics for a reason. In 2021, Utah Jazz dancer Danielle Bush was absorbed in a halftime routine when — without warning — her fellow dancers switched to choreography she didn't know. Confused but committed, Danielle kept going, until she turned around and saw her boyfriend kneeling on the court, ring in hand. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Utah Jazz (@utahjazz) This one never gets old because it's so equally romantic and terrifying — imagine realizing mid-dance that you're the only one who doesn't know the moves? Luckily, Danielle recovered quickly, said yes, and sealed it all with a kiss — proving that even a botched routine can lead to a perfect ending. National Proposal Day is a beautiful reminder to cherish and celebrate the love that enriches our lives, whether by taking the next step in a relationship or simply appreciating the journey together.
