Parsons police spread kindness with gift cards for seniors
PARSONS, Kan. — Kindness is on display in Parsons on this National Random Acts of Kindness Day.
As part of a new initiative, the department will be handing out Walmart gift cards to senior citizens who are signed-up with the Meals on Wheels program.
It's being made possible thanks to donations from the community throughout the year to the Parsons Police Legacy Fund, which supports a number of community outreach projects.
'Seniors are the backbone of our community. They make up, roughly, about 17-percent of our population, and we want to reach out to them. The other piece to this is that with each of those cards, is also an application for seniors to fill out for our new 'R U OK' program, which is a telephone reassurance program that's free of charge,' said Robert Spinks, Parsons Police Chief.
Grant money is funding that program.
The police department is already planning for what it does every December for kids and families in need.
