Mike Rogers launches another bid for U.S. Senate
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers says he will again seek the Republican nomination to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate. Rogers was narrowly defeated in last year's race by now-Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Holly. Slotkin took the seat vacated when former Sen. Debbie Stabenow retired. Rogers is running to replace Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, who is also not seeking reelection. Speaking with News 8 Monday, Rogers said he has some important endorsements and momentum. 'We had the majority leader and the chairman of the National Republican Senate Committee endorsed (me) this morning. No. 1, that's huge. Getting good vibes out of the White House: That's huge. And we're getting a huge outpouring across the state, which at the end of the day is more important,' Rogers said. 'And remember, we had a primary not that long ago. It was a four-way primary. They spent millions and millions of dollars attacking me. I took about 65% of that vote.' The filing deadline for the 2026 primary election is still a year away, but that is not slowing down the procession of candidates who are jumping in. Rogers is the first high-profile Republican in the race. He said he is not sure there will be a primary this cycle, though U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga of Zeeland and former gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon have also been mentioned as possible GOP candidates. For Democrats, state Sen. Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak says she will run. There is speculation that U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens of Birmingham may be a contender. Former Democratic candidate for governor Abdul El-Sayed is thought to be considering a run, as well. The Senate race, along with that of governor, secretary of state and attorney general, plus every seat in the Michigan Legislature, will make for a very active election cycle in 2026.
