Upward Broadband launches first of 19 new internet service towers

THREE SPRINGS, Pa. (WTAJ) – Upward Broadband is launching its first tower to bring Internet service to rural areas, and there are 18 more on the way. This project is a collaboration among Upward Broadband and Huntingdon and Fulton Counties. The total is $17 million, with Upward Broadband's CEO Tim Beiler saying 90% of that is being paid for by a grant from the National Telecommunication and Information Administration. After two years of planning, the first tower near Three Springs is now operational – and Huntingdon's commissioners are happy to celebrate its launch. Mount Union man petitioning to allow liquor, wine at restaurants 'I believe we're going to reach the majority of our residents,' Commissioner Scott Walls said. The towers' connections will not reach users through fiber optic cables. Instead, the service will be provided wirelessly. 'We're able to deploy in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost compared to wireline networks,' Beiler said. As for what it will cost for users to join the network, Beiler says clients are typically paying 'in the $70 to $80 a month range' with speeds up to 400 mbps. Eighteen towers still need to be built, which Beiler says residents can expect to see over 'the next few months, and really over the next about two years.' If you are interested in joining the service or want a coverage area map, visit Upward Broadband's website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
