Marie Nitura on raising sports-minded children like Shaina, Judiel: 'They were born with grit'
Marie Nitura saw first hand her children's passion for sports take root at an early age and all she did is offer her support. Years later, her six children, all student-athletes, have fulfilled their sports dreams — and she is still supporting them in all their endeavors. The two eldest, Toni and Iñigo, previously suited up for the National University women's volleyball team and Rizal Technological University's basketball team, respectively. Third-born Cyrus, meanwhile, was previously with the Perpetual ALTAs and is now bringing his act to Mapua University where he is primed to be a huge part of the Cardinals' title defense come NCAA Season 101. Judiel, on the other hand, is currently part of Colegio de San Juan de Letran's women's volleyball squad, which recently booked a return ticket to the finals of NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball tournament. The young ones, Shaina and Lance, are also in the sports world with the former leading Adamson University women's volleyball team in UAAP and is part of the Alas Pilipinas women's team, while the latter is part of Perpetual Junior ALTAs that recently ruled the NCAA Season 100 juniors basketball contest. READ MORE | How growing up in a family of athletes led Judiel Nitura to Letran While her children are all naturally athletic, Marie stressed she did not force them into sport as they found it on their own. "They're born with a ball-heart. I think it's not me, it's divine intervention. Talagang they want ball, they want basketball, they want volleyball. Hindi siya ipinilit sa kanila, talagang hiningi nila," Marie shared to GMA News Online on Tuesday. "They saw it on TV and then they wanted it. Then ako, support na lang all throughout, super support. Bilang parent, whatever they want support ako and masuwerte lang ako na they want the sport." Marie admitted that raising six children who all share the same passion is a challenge for her, but she embraces it as part of motherhood, and seeing them succeed on their own makes every effort worthwhile. "They have different characteristics and attitudes different din naman. In some ways, ang meron lang sila na pareho ay 'yung passion, the heart, and the grit to excel," she added. 'I think they were born with the grit. We're not a family of players, hindi naman kami sikat. We're starting lang.' —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Call for new Mideast peace drive
Hello, Mr President: Macron taking a selfie with students during his visit to the National University. — AFP France and Indonesia called for progress on 'mutual recognition' between Israel and the Palestinians at a key meeting next month as Emmanuel Macron visited Jakarta, bringing the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation into his diplomatic efforts. It came as Paris and Jakarta signed a series of cooperation agreements, with Macron seeking to deepen trade and defence ties with South-East Asia's largest economy on a three-country tour promoting France as a balancing power between the United States and China. Speaking next to his French counterpart, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto made the rare pledge of recognising Israel if it allowed for a Palestinian state. Indonesia has no formal ties with Israel and support for the Palestinian cause runs high there. 'Indonesia sees that the two-state solution and the freedom of Palestine is the only way to achieve the true peace,' Prabowo told a news conference yesterday. 'We must acknowledge and guarantee Israel's rights as a sovereign country that must be paid attention to and guaranteed safety. Indonesia has stated that once Israel recognises Palestine, Indonesia is ready to recognise Israel and open the diplomatic relationship.' Macron issued a joint statement with Prabowo that condemned Israeli plans to take control of Gaza and any moves to 'forcibly remove the Palestinian population from their homeland'. Macron with Prabowo during a press briefing at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. — AFP But they also called for restoring the political prospect of the two-state solution at a conference Paris will co-chair at the UN headquarters in New York next month with Saudi Arabia and expressed hope for a 'credible roadmap'. They said the event 'should allow for an irreversible path towards the realisation of a Palestinian State, (and) mutual recognition between Israel and Palestine'. Macron earlier held talks with Prabowo after being greeted by a guard of honour, gun salute and thousands of young Indonesians waving French flags. 'Our partnership on all the fields, defence and security, economy, culture is already strong, but we are strengthening it,' Macron told Prabowo. The nations yesterday signed a series of memoranda of understanding on cooperation in a range of fields including defence, trade, agriculture, disaster management, culture and transport. Today, he will travel to Yogyakarta on Indonesia's Java island to visit the world's largest Buddhist temple, before heading to Singapore to conclude his six-day tour. In the face of Donald Trump's tariffs and the United States' economic confrontation with China, Macron was seeking to turn his 'third way' position into contracts for French companies, particularly in defence, energy and critical minerals. He said there would be new Indonesian orders for Rafale jets from French company Dassault Aviation, whose chief Eric Trappier joined the French delegation. — AFP

SEC schools ranked academically by U.S. News for 2025
The SEC is now 16 teams deep with the additions of Texas and Oklahoma, who, while offering impressive athletic programs, are also scholastically strong. Over the years, those who don't pay attention to college rankings, strictly based on academics, shy away from the SEC, mainly due to its dominance and focus on football and basketball, as many ignore what each school offers outside of sports. In the Lone Star State, Texas and Texas A&M are two of the best state schools in the country. They offer a private school-like education and a wide variety of majors that can lead to a lucrative and rewarding future. In the South, Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State have strengths in journalism, agriculture, and engineering. They provide low in-state tuition for students not looking to break the bank and stay close to home to earn a degree. Every year, US News releases its latest National University rankings. While schools like Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford top the list each year, all 16 SEC Universities, outside of a handful, are ranked within the top 150, including several in the top 50. Again, every school possesses separate strengths in the classroom, so these rankings don't define each University's value. With record crowd, five-peat secured, NU's Dante Alinsunurin hopes for continuous growth of men's volleyball in PH
A record crowd of 14,517 watched National University and Far Eastern University battle for the UAAP Season 87 men's volleyball title last Saturday — a rare sight for the event which just years ago was playing in front of almost empty arenas. Now, men's volleyball has been gaining ground and five-peat champion coach Dante Alinsunurin himself turned emotional as he saw the fans for both squads cheering inside the Mall of Asia Arena. "Medyo nangingilid luha ko sa nakita ko kanina. Sabi ko bakit ngayon lang nangyari samantalang siguro past 2018 pa nagsimula na tayo sa men's na umaangat na. Nagkaproblema lang talaga at nagka-pandemic," Alinsunurin said in a press conference on Saturday. "Sana magtuloy-tuloy, hindi lang para sa NU community at FEU community 'yung suporta para sa amin." Alinsunurin said seeing crowds as big as that inspires coaches and players to be better in their sport. "Sana sa mga susunod pa ng liga ng men's, lagi silang nandiyan kasi napaka-importante sa players and coaches na makakita ng ganito. Lalo pa naming mapagbubutihan sa pag-coach at paglalaro. Parang alam mo sa sarili mo na na-appreciate na talaga 'yung men's dito sa Pilipinas," he said. But beyond the record attendance, NU has also cemented its legacy in men's volleyball with its seven titles overall and Alinsunurin himself got teary-eyed as he recalled the struggles of building a winning program. The title also came months before the country hosts the FIVB Men's World Championship which will be held in September in the same venue. —JMB, GMA Integrated News
