After slashing staff, NWS can now hire to fill 126 jobs

After firings, early retirements and buyouts left vacancies across National Weather Service offices, the agency confirmed this week it will seek to hire 126 new employees. In a statement, NWS spokesperson Erica Cei confirmed NOAA leadership 'will hire a targeted number of permanent, mission-critical field positions' that 'will soon be advertised under an exception to the department-wide hiring freeze to stabilize frontline operations.' She added that NOAA 'is taking steps to address those who took a voluntary early retirement option' from their positions, but it remains unclear whether several hundred fired probationary employees will be eligible to apply for the positions. Winter Storm Warning is in effect. How much snow is on the way?

HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) – The National Weather Service Offices in Paducah & Louisville have much of the Tri-state under a Winter Storm Warning, meaning heavy snow is expected with a winter storm moving into the Tri-state later today into the overnight hours. With temperatures below freezing for the past couple days, snow should have no issue sticking to the ground. Both offices say in their winter storm warning alert that 'roads will become slick and hazardous and that travel will be difficult.' At this time, the National Weather Service Offices in Lincoln, IL and Indianapolis, IN do not have Clay, Richland, Lawrence, Knox, Daviess (IN) or Martin counties under the Winter Storm Warning. Since snowfall in these counties looks to be around an inch or slightly more, the offices have those areas under a Winter Weather Advisory (WWA). Even under a Winter Weather Advisory, slick roads are possible and can cause issues with the evening and morning commutes. Unlike our winter storm last month, no freezing rain is expected, which prompted an ice storm warning. Below is the current forecast from Your Weather Authority. As the weather team continues to look at the new weather data coming in before the snow arrives, the forecast below will be updated, so refresh this page from time to time for the latest snowfall total forecast. As the heavy snow comes to an end Wednesday morning, the snowpack will keep temperatures down, staying well below freezing during the day and night until the weekend.
