Troublesome inmates in Mangaluru prison to be shifted to other facilities: Prison Department
Taking serious note of two incidents of clash among inmates in Mangaluru District Prison, the Prison and Correctional Services Department is contemplating shifting of about 30 'troublesome' Mangaluru prison inmates to other prisons. A senior prison official said a list of 'troublesome' inmates is being prepared. Decision on shifting them to other prisons will be taken shortly, the official said. Undertrial prisoner Naushad was injured following a clash between two groups of undertrial prisoners in the Mangaluru District Prison on Monday (May 19, 2025). The clash came after a group of inmates in the quarantine block stared at a group of inmates from the 'B' block. On May 20, some undertrial prisoners in Barrack 'A' assaulted fellow undertrials who were preparing food in the cooking room. Following this, inmates of Barrack 'B' began screaming and tried to break open the iron door of their barrack. They damaged 10 CCTV cameras installed inside their barrack and pulled out the wires of the cameras. The prisoners also damaged the antenna of the mobile jammer in Barrack 'B'. Separate cases were registered by the Barke police against 10 persons each with respect to the two incidents. They will be called to the police station for inquiry, the police said Clashes not new Clashes among inmates is not new in the Mangaluru District Prison, a rare prison where inmates are divided based on their community — Muslim and Hindu — in A and B blocks. There is also a quarantine block and a women's block in the prison. There are more than 300 inmates in the prison, which has carrying capacity of 210 inmates. The prison, which is in the heart of the city, has been facing issues with people throwing contraband items, including mobile phone and narcotic drugs, from the compound wall for use of inmates. On December 25,2024, warder David was booked under provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act by the Mangaluru police for allegedly helping a few inmates get cannabis. For the lack of supervision over David and a few other charges, the Department placed the then Superintendent of the Prison Ashe Khan on suspension. The department has posted Suresh as the new Superintendent. Work on new prison moving at snail's pace The construction of a new, highly-secured district prison, near Bantwal, is being carried out at a snail's pace. With the ₹110 crore spent so far, only the physical structure has come up while a compound wall is yet to be built. The State government is yet to release funds of ₹195 crore for the second phase of work.

Sarfaraz Khan swaps Biryani with Avocados, faces 300-500 swinging balls a day to replace Virat Kohli in India's Test XI
Sarfaraz Khan has been one of Mumbai's most consistent domestic cricket performers; however, the talented right-hander's chances in international cricket have come in patches. Despite playing a 150-run knock against New Zealand in Bengaluru, Sarfaraz, 27, was benched in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Despite having a knack for batting long and making the most of his chances, one of Sarfaraz's constant criticisms has revolved around his weight. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar once helped Sarfaraz, defending him from being overweight. However, the batter has vowed to prove his naysayers wrong. Ahead of the England tour that starts next month, Sarfaraz has shed 10 kgs in less than two months. The Mumbai-born batter was recently named in the India A squad for the two matches against the England Lions, beginning May 30. The Hindustan Times spoke to Sarfaraz's father, Naushad Khan, about his son's weight loss journey and preparations for the big tour that lies ahead. "We have controlled our diet a lot. We have stopped eating roti, rice, etc. We haven't eaten roti or rice at home for 1 to 1.5 months. We eat broccoli, carrot, cucumber, salad, and green vegetable salad. Along with that, we eat grilled fish, grilled chicken, boiled chicken, boiled egg, etc. We are also having green tea and green coffee," Naushad said. "We eat avocados also. There are sprouts also. But the main thing is that we have stopped eating roti and rice. We have stopped eating sugar. We have stopped eating maida (flour) and bakery items," he added. Considering the Khan household no longer consumes rice, Sarfaraz has given up his favourite, 'biryani'. The batter has made a conscious decision to stop feasting on chicken and mutton biryani to lose weight and get in proper shape. Naushad also revealed that the entire family has been on a weight-loss journey. He talked about how he himself dropped 12 kgs after being advised by his doctor to do so. "He has almost lost 10 kgs within 1.5 months. He is working on reducing his weight even further. I have reduced 12 kgs myself because I had a knee issue. So, I also benefited from it. The doctor told me that I have to do a knee replacement. So, I told him that I had to delay it. He told me that I have to reduce my weight for that," he added. Sarfaraz, who had made his Test debut in February 2024 against England, has played six matches for India in the longest format, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.10. He hopes to perform well in the A tour against the England Lions to make a case for himself to start in the playing XI when first Test begins in Headingley. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's retirements from Tests, two spots have opened up, and Sarfaraz is eager to latch on to the opportunity. With Kohli gone, India need to fill the No. 4 spot, and while captain Shubman Gill is likely to take it up, Sarfaraz cannot be ruled out to replace Kohli in India's Test XI. While focusing on his fitness, Sarfaraz remains committed to letting his bat do the talking. He has been dedicating himself to extended batting sessions, working diligently to adapt to the swinging conditions in the UK. "We leave our house at 5.30 AM in the morning. We then go to the Cross Maidan, which is 15 km away from here. We reach there around 6:15-6:30 in the morning. After that, we do some warm-up, running, fielding, and then we start batting. The entire morning session is of batting with red balls. After that, we come back here around 10:30 in the morning. We have breakfast and then rest," said Naushad. "We have an artificial turf at our house. We then practice batting on that in the afternoon after getting enough rest. We play 300 to 500 swing balls on that. We play swinging balls on that. After batting, if we get time, we go to the gym. We go to BKC to work out. If we don't want to bat in the evening, we go directly to BKC for swimming and gym," he added. India A will play the England Lions in two first-class matches. The first match will be played from May 30 to June 2 in Canterbury, while the second game will be played from June 6 to 9 in Northampton. India A will also play the senior men's side in an intra-squad game in Beckenham from June 13 to 16.

Fitter, leaner Sarfaraz gears up for India A tour of England
MUMBAI: Sarfaraz Khan is eagerly looking forward to playing his first match for India A in England. It is going to be a perfect platform for the batter to showcase the kind of preparation he has done for the upcoming five-Test series in England. Under the guidance of his father-coach, Naushad Khan, the Mumbai batter has left no stone unturned in his bid to prove that he has the game to perform in all conditions, and not just on home tracks. Apart from going through long hours of batting drills, he has worked extra hard on fitness over the last two months. He has switched to a strict diet plan, and the benefits were evident when he came for the T20 Mumbai League auctions as the icon player of the Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs along with Suryakumar Yadav. His learner look earned compliments from everyone. 'Looking at Sarfaraz, I am also following him. We have stopped making rice and rotis at home. It's mainly grilled chicken, grilled fish, boiled eggs, vegetables like broccoli, avocado, etc. Sarfaraz has shed nine kg in the last one-and-a-half months. I have also benefitted by losing around 12 kg,' said Naushad, a former Western Railway cricketer. While the rest of the Indian cricketers' form and progress can be tracked in the Indian Premier League, Sarfaraz, who is not playing in the T20 league, has made use of the time by preparing hard for red-ball cricket. The regulars at the Cross Maidan see the father and sons slog it out every morning at the Karnataka Sporting Association pitch. The matches he was waiting for is here after being included in the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led India A squad for the tour of England starting on May 30. India A are scheduled to play two games against England Lions (May 30-June 2 in Canterbury and June 6-9 in Northampton) and one intra-squad match against the India Test squad (June 13-16 in Beckenham). How Sarfaraz fares in the matches is important to win back his place in the Test eleven. The England players know Sarfaraz's potential. He made his debut against them at home last year, making a mark with three half-centuries in five innings to aggregate 200 runs at an average of 50. In his nascent six-Test career, Sarfaraz also smashed 150 against New Zealand in the first Test late last year, on a challenging Bengaluru pitch where India were shot out for 46 in their first innings. But low scores in the last two Tests – India lost 0-3 to New Zealand – saw him lose his place in the playing XI for the series in Australia. The English conditions throw up a different challenge with the ball moving around all day. Determined to do well there, his training is specifically tuned to address that. 'He is practising with the red ball on green tops, playing around 300 balls each session, in the morning and in the evening,' Naushad said. 'Sarfaraz does two-and-a-half hours of batting against a set of six-seven bowlers, including two-three right-arm pacers, a left-arm pacer, off-spinner, leg-arm spinner. We use a dark shiny ball, similar to the Dukes cricket ball. We know the ball will move all day long, the ball will not get old early (in England),' said Naushad. In the evenings, the days he doesn't have a gym session, Sarfaraz bat at the nets installed in their society complex. 'We pour water on the Astroturf pitch. It is to play the swing ball (synthetic). The ball comes on rapidly on a wet wicket.' The practice is focused on leaving the ball, to know where the off-stump is, on ducking, leaving and the drives. 'He is doing fitness and fielding also. Every week there are gym and swimming sessions at BKC club (Sharad Pawar Indoor Academy). Monday is dedicated to fielding, high catches, slip catches, close-in fielding,' said Naushad. Looking at past series in England, it had been a challenge for most Indian batters to adapt to the conditions. For those who did well, specific preparation was the key. Sarfaraz has done the preparation. Now, it's about putting it to practice.
