Council to fill Arthur seat
May 29—Mayor: Village has received multiple applications for South Point council SOUTH POINT — The South Point Village Council is scheduled to fill an open seat on the body at their next meeting. Mayor Jeff Gaskin said an agreement was made at the council's May meeting to wait until the June meeting to appoint an individual to the seat left vacant by the death of council member Marlene Arthur. Arthur, who had served three decades on council, died April 29 at age 87. Gaskin said the council will appoint a replacement to the seat, but, if that is not done, the duty falls to the mayor. Gaskin said the village has received multiple applications for the seat and he expects the council to name someone to the seat. In other news, Gaskin said representatives of the village made a trip on Friday to pick up the newest truck for the South Point Fire Department and bring it to Lawrence County in time for Monday's Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade. He said the truck is about "95 percent finished" and, after the parade, they will return it for completion. The $987,000 vehicle is a 2025 Sutphen truck and will be paid off over 15 years, Gaskin said. He said the purchase was made after voters approved a fire levy increase in November 2024. Gaskin said the newest truck was set to appear in the parade with the village's oldest truck, a 1928 model, which was returned to South Point a few years ago and restored for use as a show truck. That truck is making its third appearance in the parade this year, he said. Gaskin noted that the antique truck will be 100 years old in three years. The next meeting of South Point Village Council is set for 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 3. EDITORIAL: A community comes together
May 28—With the passage of Scout Troop 106 through downtown Ironton, picking up trash left behind, as they do each year, the annual Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade has come to a close. In addition to the Scouts, city workers and volunteers were also out doing clean-up duty as well. These are but a few examples of how the community comes together each year to make this event happen and help with aspects before, during and after. Whether it is crews putting flags up at Woodland Cemetery for the annual veterans service or businesses and individuals decorating along the parade route, every contribution helps. And not least are those on the parade committee, who begin organizing and booking participants and floats for the parade, as well as planning its surrounding events, such as fireworks and Navy Night, months in advance. We thank all who put forth this effort each year to not just honor veterans and those who sacrificed, but to ensure that the city's claim of the longest-running Memorial Day event of its kind continues. Navy Night begins city's Memorial Day weekend
May 27—By HEATH HARRISON The Ironton Tribune A gap in the rainy weather on Thursday timed out perfectly so that the annual Navy Night ceremony on the city's riverfront could take place. As Ironton Mayor Sam Cramblit II pointed out, the event is the first public memorial service for Ironton's busy weekend of events around the holiday, which concludes with the annual Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade, the longest continuous observance of its kind in the nation. The event began with an invocation from Chad Pemberton and the posting of the colors from Ironton VFW Post 8850. In addition to the VFW, others returning for their yearly duties in the ceremony were the brass ensemble from Rock Hill High School, as well as Scout Troop 106, of Ironton. The Scouts conducted a flag folding ceremony, under the direction of Dave Lucas, and their bugler played "Taps." Cramblit then read a proclamation proclaiming Thursday as Navy Night in the City of Ironton. The keynote speaker for this year was LCDR Sean Dulaney, of the U.S. Navy Reserve Center in Eleanor, West Virginia. Dulaney noted the history of Ironton, with regards to the Navy. He pointed out that steel from the city's then-booming iron industry was used in the USS Monitor, the U.S. Navy's first ironclad ship, which famously battled the Confederate ship Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimack) during the Civil War. Following Dulaney's remarks, the Scouts carried a memorial wreath to the riverfront, where it was placed in the Ohio's waters. The event, which drew dozens to the river, was hosted by the parade committee and featured grand marshal Ray Jones and parade commander Lou Pyles, while retired Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Charles Cooper returned as master of ceremonies.
