Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old man was tentatively charged in the Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday with trafficking drugs. However, no plea was recorded from Alsafi Amir Hassan, who appeared before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus, after the charge was read out to him. Advertisement Alsafi was accused of trafficking 51.85gm of 3,4 Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) on May 28, this year, at 12.10pm, in a room of an entertainment outlet, Lorong Pavilion Bundusan, Penampang. The charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, carries a punishment of either the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane. The court fixed July 23 for mention pending the chemist's report. Alsafi was ordered to be remanded further pending the date as the charge against him has no provision for bail. Meanwhile, a 26-year-old man claimed trial to assisting in hiding a stolen vehicle. Mohd Hafieszul Mohd Adnin pleaded not guilty to helping in hiding a stolen Toyota Hilux belonging to Nawie Oilfield Services Sdn Bhd on June 3, this year, at 10.45pm, at Kg Lembaga Padi area, Jalan Lintas here. The charge is framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between six months and seven years and liable to a fine, on conviction. Hafieszul was offered bail of RM2,500 in two sureties pending pre-trial case management on July 23. In another case, four men were penalised for having syabu. Khairul Anwar Abd Rahman, Rizal Usman, Abd Umbing and Abd Sham pleaded guilty to having syabu weighing between 3.1gm and 0.15gm, at separate locations here between Jan 28 and Feb 4, this year. Khairul, Rizal, Abd Umbing and Abd Sham were jailed 12 months, 10 months, eight months and seven months, respectively. They were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years' jail, or both, on conviction. Khairul and Rizal also pleaded guilty to taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years' jail, on conviction.
