Marseille make West Ham's Nayef Aguerd priority target

Olympique de Marseille are in the market for at least one centre-back this summer and have made West Ham United's Nayef Aguerd (29) their priority target, according to a report from Foot Mercato. Marseille's defence was their achilles heel this season and, ahead of next season's UEFA Champions League campaign, it is an area that they are desperate to strengthen, with at least one addition and likely more. Aymeric Laporte, who is expected to terminate his contract with Al-Nassr in the coming days, has been strongly linked with a move to the Vélodrome. Advertisement Aguerd, who spent the season on loan at Real Sociedad, is set to leave West Ham this summer and is keen on playing in the Champions League. Real Sociedad wish to keep him but there are other top clubs circling, including Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. Like the latter, Marseille have made contact with Aguerd's entourage regarding a move. Having already played at Stade Rennais, the Morocco international is open to a return to France. Aguerd Out for Injury as Real Sociedad Face Celta Test

Real Sociedad have been dealt a fresh injury setback as Moroccan center-back Nayef Aguerd has been ruled out of tonight's La Liga game against Celta Vigo due to a knee problem. The 29-year-old, on loan from West Ham United, pulled up during the warm-up ahead of Saturday's 4–0 thumping by Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano. He was forced to withdraw from the starting XI at the last minute. Aguerd sat out training on Sunday alongside fellow absentee Sheraldo Becker, and manager Imanol Alguacil sounded pessimistic about the pair's involvement: 'Nayef and Becker haven't returned to training. It's unlikely they'll be available.' The defender has featured 36 times across all competitions this season and has been a key part of La Real's back line. But since the last international break in March, the Moroccan has played only 117 minutes for Sociedad. However, his availability for the final two fixtures – against Girona and Real Madrid – remains uncertain, pending further medical assessment. Club spokesperson Jon Ander Monduate confirmed on Monday: 'Nayef is still struggling with pain in his knee and won't be involved tonight. We'll evaluate his condition in the coming days.' Sociedad, still chasing a European spot, can ill afford any more slip-ups. Tonight's tie against an in-form Celta Vigo side – kicking off at 8 p.m. Moroccan time (GMT+1) – comes with added pressure after the humiliating loss to Atleti, which saw Alexander Sørloth fire in a historic 11-minute hat-trick. Mundo Deportivo: Nayef Aguerd Key in Morocco's Victory Over Niger

Rabat – Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd has drawn attention for being a solid brick in the defensive wall of his country's national football squad. Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo described the Real Sociedad's defender as instrumental in Morocco's 2-1 victory over Niger during Friday night's World Cup 2026 qualifier. The Real Sociedad central defender displayed defensive excellence as well as offensive contributions to his team's counter-attacks throughout the match. Aguerd nearly scored in the 15th minute with a powerful long-range effort that struck the post. His defensive organization proved crucial after Niger took an early second-half lead. He helped prevent further damage while facilitating quick counter-attacks that led to Morocco's equalizer. 'His ability to anticipate and move forward with the ball was key to Morocco's ability to react and seek a comeback,' Deportivo said. The Spanish newspaper spoke of Aguerd's mastery and efficiency on the field, demonstrating his anticipation skills and ability to restart attacks. His presence during set pieces created numerous dangerous situations in Niger's penalty area, demonstrating his multifaceted impact on the game. Manchester United linked with shock move for West Ham loanee

Manchester United are being linked with a shock move to sign Nayef Aguerd from West Ham, amid an impressive loan spell at Real Sociedad. Aguerd joined the Spanish side on loan last summer after being deemed surplus to requirements at West Ham, following the signings of Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman. The defender joined the Hammers from Rennes for a fee of £30m in 2022 but fell out of favour after an initial bright start at the London Stadium. The Moroccan has since rediscovered his form in San Sebastien, where he has made 19 appearances in La Liga this season. Aguerd ranks in the top eight percent of La Liga centre-backs for progressive carries, cross-field switches and aerial duels won per game in 2024/25. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United are weighing up a potential summer move. Lisandro Martinez is facing a long spell on the sidelines with an ACL injury and the Red Devils lack a natural left-sided option for Ruben Amorim's back three in his absence. Aguerd's past experience of the Premier League has made him a potential option, for a Manchester United side whose spending may be limited in the summer. However, West Ham manager Graham Potter is set to run the rule over Aguerd ahead of next season. The 49-year-old, who replaced Julen Lopetegui in January, also believes the defender could impress in a back three. Meanwhile, Sociedad are keen to secure the 28-year-old's signature on a permanent basis. Read – See more – | | | |
