Norfolk Public Schools accepts superintendent's resignation; search for interim superintendent to begin

NORFOLK, Neb. (KCAU) — Norfolk Public Schools has voted to begin the search for an interim superintendent after accepting the resignation of current superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson. The school's Board of Education met Monday and approved Thompson's resignation, which will take place at the end of the contract year as part of the consent agenda. The board later voted to hire the Nebraska Association of School Boards (NASB) to help search for an interim superintendent for the 2025-2026 school year. Nebraska nonprofit addressing rural child care shortage School Board President Brenda Carhart said the board is looking to hire an interim superintendent for the next school year due to the time it takes to find suitable candidates. 'We're looking at just doing an interim for the next school year,' she said. 'I feel that interim is the best way to go because we are on such a short timeline, and Dr. Thompson's last [day] is June 30. It doesn't give us a lot of time to do a full complete search for a superintendent. A full process takes many months with many meetings to get input from staff, to get input from the community, get input from the school board. It's a much more drawn-out process.' She added that many are currently signing contracts for the next school year. She also explained why she felt going through the Nebraska Association of School Boards would assist in the search for an interim superintendent. Not only is Norfolk Public Schools part of the NASB, the NASB would be able to vet candidates and be transparent. Carhart added that they could then use the time to find if there is another search agency to help in the search for a permanent superintendent. 'So, I think at this time… we're just talking about interim,' Carhart said. She added that hiring the NASB would cost $2,500. If approved, the board would need to schedule a meeting with NASB, hopefully for the week of March 31 through April 4. That would be an open meeting. The board voted unanimously and then further discussed when to schedule a meeting with an official with the NASB to start the search. Thompson announced her resignation after being accepted to be the superintendent at Rapid City Area Schools in South Dakota starting July 1. She has served as the superintendent of Norfolk Public Schools for 12 years, having filled the position in July 2013. Before Norfolk, Thompson served Beatrice Public Schools for 18 years as a teacher and administrator. She received the Milken National Educator Award while serving at Beatrice.
