Fresh push for new bottle store in 'worst' location

The former Black Bull Liquor store in Manurewa is the site of a new alcohol licensing application, which has angered opponents who say the site is close to two schools. Photo: Googlemaps/LDR A third attempt to set up a bottle shop near three schools in South Auckland is being strongly opposed by the community and advocacy groups. Russell Road Liquor has made an application to the District Licensing Committee (DLC) to operate a new off-licence bottle shop at 70 Russell Road, Manurewa. The site is the old Black Bull Liquor Manurewa - which failed to re-establish a licence twice, the most recent last year. Communities Against Alcohol Harm (CAAH) secretary and lawyer Dr Grant Hewison said they were prepared to do all they could to stop it from opening. "This is the worst place to want to have a liquor store and a thoughtless proposal from the applicant," Hewison said. "This is the third time the alcohol industry has tried to open a store here since Black Bull Manurewa failed to renew their licence in 2023." According to Auckland Council's Local Alcohol Policy (LAP), the site for the proposed shop was in a Neighbourhood Centre Zone, which has added protection against new off-licences. Under their application, Russell Road Liquor applied to sell alcohol from Monday to Sunday, 9am to 9pm. Their application notice was posted in community papers on March 27. The site for the proposed bottle shop was located close to three schools - the closest, Manurewa Intermediate, was just 130 metres away. There were also five alcohol outlets within a one kilometre radius. "It is clear from the Auckland Local Alcohol Policy that this is absolutely the wrong place to open a liquor store, in a small set of neighbourhood shops, right next to Manurewa Intermediate, and a few doors up the road from Manurewa West Primary School," Hewison said. He said the CAAH have set up an online petition for objections, and organised a community protest outside the store. "There have already been dozens of objections submitted from the community using our easy online Jotform tool. "I would also expect the official agencies to be strongly opposed too, given the vulnerability of the locality, the proximity to sensitive sites, and the inconsistency with Auckland's Local Alcohol Policy." Hewison said the policy on Neighbourhood Centres in the LAP was set up to protect vulnerable communities. "[It] was in response to community concerns about liquor stores on every corner, increasing the availability of alcohol to members of the community who are generally more at risk of alcohol harm, especially in residential areas of higher deprivation." The previous bottle store closed in 2023 after it failed to renew its liquor licence. Two attempts after that to get a renewal were withdrawn after strong community opposition. Russell Road Liquor did not respond to requests for comment. LDR is local body journalism co-funded by RNZ and NZ On Air. Refit completion of MNDF Huravee bolsters India-Maldives defence cooperation

As part of India's commitment to regional maritime security under the MAHASAGAR vision, and its 'Neighbourhood First' policy, the Indian Navy successfully completed a major refit of the Maldivian Coast Guard Ship MNDF Huravee at the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, it said. The 'Make in India' ship handed over to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) in May 2023 as a replacement for an older platform, has played a crucial role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) and medical evacuation operations across the Maldivian archipelago, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. New Delhi, Apr 21 (PTI) The Indian Navy has successfully completed a major refit of Maldivian Coast Guard Ship MNDF Huravee at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, as part of India's commitment to regional maritime security under the vision of MAHASAGAR — 'Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth for all in the Region' and its 'Neighbourhood First' policy. The ship set sail for Maldives on April 21 upon completing her maiden normal refit at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. 'Over the last four months since her arrival in Mumbai on November 13, 2024, major works concerning the maintenance of all machinery, weapons, and sensors, along with a habitability upgrade, were undertaken. The ship was thereafter put through rigorous harbour and sea trials, operational checks of equipment, safety audits and operational sea training before her departure,' the statement said. The efforts put in by various Indian Navy agencies and dockyard teams across multiple departments were instrumental in achieving this extensive refit within the stipulated timeframe, it said. 'The successful refit of MNDF Huravee underscores the strong diplomatic and military cooperation between the two countries and reaffirms India's unwavering commitment to being a reliable partner in the region,' the ministry said. Graham Norton announces surprising next step in his TV career following Australia live shows

Graham Norton has announced his next career move – and it may come as a surprise to fans. The seasoned TV host has been confirmed as the presenter of the new ITV series The Neighbourhood. The show will be Norton's first venture into the reality world despite decades having worked in television. Norton, 61, is confident in his latest career move, however, telling The Sun that he expects his new show to become the 'nation's favourite destination'. The Neighbourhood will follow real-life families trying to 'rub along as neighbours' after moving into a street that requires them to share meals and navigate other social occasions and 'dastardly' challenges. Gradually, the families will start voting one another out. In order to win, contestants will have to one-up their neighbours while remaining popular and liked on the street. 'Like everyone, I'm always intrigued by what goes on behind closed doors,' Graham told The Sun in a new interview about the series. 'Add to that some dastardly challenges and a life-changing prize and I'm hooked.' He continued: 'I feel confident that The Neighbourhood will be the nation's favourite destination.' The ITV show will surely try to match the success of the BBC's hit game show The Traitors. Fronted by Claudia Winkleman, the series, which recently concluded its third season, sees 22 strangers gather in a castle for the chance at winning £120,000. The Neighbourhood will begin filming later this year and is expected to air sometime in 2026. Norton's news arrives shortly after he revealed who will replace him on his iconic talk show as he takes a hiatus from filming in order to head to Australia for his live tour. This month, Norton will present An Evening with Graham Norton – a live show in which the Irish presenter will relay hilarious anecdotes and take questions from the audience. Rather than halting production of the series, the corporation is pushing on with a replacement, and Winkleman will be overtaking Norton while he's away. After Norton revealed the news during an episode of The Graham Norton Show on which Winkleman was a guest, she quipped: 'I apologise in advance'. This will be the second time Norton has been replaced on his own chat show, with Jack Whitehall sitting in the presenter's chair in 2019 when the host was unable to fulfil his duties. Winkleman previously replaced Norton in another stint when he quit BBC Radio 2 after more than 10 years of presenting the Saturday morning show in 2021.
