Princess Anne visits Sark for the island's 80th Liberation Day

The Princess Royal came to Sark to mark the island's 80th anniversary of Liberation Day. After visiting Guernsey the day before, Princess Anne arrived on the morning of Saturday 10 May. The Princess first attended Little Sark and crossed the iconic La Coupée bridge - making her the first royal to do so. Several meetings were also held with local dignitaries on the princess' tour of the island. Families turned out for a lively street party, which the princess witnessed as she walked through the Avenue - before a meeting with Nellie Le Feuvre, 98, from Sark. Nellie was deported by the Nazis with her family in 1943. She was kept as a prisoner in camps in France and Germany. After meeting the princess, she said "It was wonderful. It's the second time I've met her ... she wanted to know what my experience was. "It chokes you up a bit, especially seeing all of this today". She added, "I don't think it should ever be forgotten ... war is a terrible thing". Princess Anne left the island in the early afternoon but Sark's Liberation Day celebrations continued into the evening. On 9 May 1945, the British warship HMS Bulldog arrived at St Peter Port, Guernsey, where German forces signed a document onboard to formally surrender. Sark was liberated a day later on 10 May 1945.
