Three blocks of pre-war Bongawan shops razed

BONGAWAN: Several blocks of old shop lots built in 1939 were destroyed in a fire that broke out early Tuesday, also damaging several vehicles. The fire was reported at about 5.30am. Advertisement Kimanis Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Nelson Ponji said the station received an emergency call at 5.38am via the MER999 hotline. 'A total of 24 personnel were dispatched to the scene, comprising seven from the Kimanis station, eight from Papar and seven from Beaufort,' he told Daily Express. He said the operation was supported by four police officers and supervised by Papar BBP Chief Rozlan Osman. Firefighting assets mobilised included one LFRT from Kimanis with seven personnel, one FRT from Papar with six personnel, one LFRT from Beaufort with five personnel, one EMRS from Papar with two personnel, one Vigo from Beaufort with two personnel and one Vigo from Papar with one personnel. Nelson said the fire involved three blocks of old two-storey non-permanent shop buildings. 'The first block, consisting of eight shop units measuring 30x80 feet each, was completely destroyed, while the second and third blocks, each with four shop units measuring 30x60 feet per unit, were also gutted,' he said. Firefighters carried out suppression efforts using three 600-foot hose lines with six nozzles, drawing water from both fire engines and nearby hydrants. No casualties were reported. Historic colonial-era shoplots in Bongawan destroyed by fire
KOTA KINABALU: The last few remaining British colonial-era shoplots in Bongawan have been destroyed. Three rows of pre-World War II wooden buildings were razed in an early morning fire on Tuesday (June 10). Kimanis Fire and Rescue Station chief Nelson Ponji said they received a report of the fire at about 5.38am. Firefighters from Kimanis, assisted by the Papar and Beaufort fire stations, rushed to the scene. "All three rows were completely destroyed in this fire," he said, adding that no injuries have been reported. Several vehicles were also affected. Nelson said firefighters brought the fire under control by 7.30am and remained on site to complete ground works. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
