BMW confirms new iX3 will be first of its new generation of electric cars
SPONSORED BY NEXT The Independent's Electric Vehicles Channel is sponsored by Next. It may be one of the world's worst-kept secrets, but BMW has finally confirmed that the first of its new generation electric cars will be the replacement for the current iX3 SUV. BMW's Neue Klasse technology has previously been previewed by two concept models: the Neue Klasse Vision X concept (clearly X3 in size and proportions) and the original Neue Klasse concept, which will morph into the next all-electric 3 Series. Speaking at BMW's Annual Press Conference, CEO Oliver Zipse confirmed that the new iX3 would be unveiled at this year's Munich Motor Show in September, stressing how important the new technology is to the BMW Group. 'It's a project that is unprecedented in both form and significance in the history of the BMW group. With the Neue Klasse we will be turning the mobility of the future into reality.' Zipse was standing next to a camouflaged version of the iX3 saying, 'It will be a typical X model and a BMW through and through.' After the reveal of the iX3 in September, Zipse said the roll out of new models based on Neue Klasse tech would, 'Continue in rapid succession including a sporty sedan at the core of the BMW brand in 2026.' Over the next couple of years, Zipse said that BMW will launch more than 40 new or updated model – electric, plug-in hybrid and combustion – all with the DNA of the Neue Klasse, which includes a bold new look previewed by the concept models. 'The Neue Klasse is BMW and BMW is the Neue Klasse,' said Zipse. 'It marks the beginning of a completely new generation.' All-electric models Neue Klasse models will get 800-volt technology that promises up to 30 per cent more range, 30 per cent faster charging with up to 186-miles of range added in just 10 minutes. Bi-directional charging will enable new BMWs to power your home, while costs are also coming down on a comparable range-to-range basis, according to Zipse. The new BMW Panoramic iDrive infotainment system with head-up display broadcasting across the whole windscreen will also feature on new models, powered by new on-board supercomputers that will have new AI features and over-the-air updates. With 600 meters less wiring and a 30 per cent reduction in weight, new Neue Klasse-based models will boast levels of efficiency to rival that recently announced by Mercedes with the new CLA model and its five miles per kWh claim. The new generation of BMWs are said to be even better to drive. 'We're taking driving dynamics to a whole new level,' said Zipse. 'We're pushing driving dynamics to its physical limits.'

Bold new 2026 BMW iX3 confirmed for September reveal
Bold new iX3 will take its lead from the BMW Neue Klasse Vision X concept The next era of BMW will arrive in September, with the first Neue Klasse electric car, iX3 SUV, confirmed to be revealed at the Munich motor show. Previewed last year by the bold Neue Klasse Vision X concept (below), the second-generation iX3 will be the first of BMW's new family of EVs, riding on the Gen6 platform, which promises significant improvements in range, functionality and cost. The iX3 will hit roads in 2026 as a rival to the Audi Q6 E-tron, Polestar 3 and forthcoming electric Mercedes-Benz GLC. It will be followed soon after by an electric BMW 3 Series saloon, itself modelled on the striking Neue Klasse concept. A date for this unveil has yet to be confirmed. Mules for both cars are coming towards the end of their development cycles, pictured hot weather testing programme in South Africa. Specific details on the Gen6 platform remain under wraps, but BMW has confirmed it will be equipped with 800V electrical hardware for rapid charging and accommodate batteries that are 20% more energy-dense than today's packs - boosting range by as much as 30% and efficiency by 20%. The platform also houses a new generation of lighter and more efficient electric motors, accommodating up to four in the most potent of BMW's new EVs, although the iX3 is likely to offer just the choice of single- or dual-motor powertrains, initially at least. The combustion-engined BMW X3, the firm's current best seller, will continue to be sold alongside the new iX3. The fourth generation of the SUV was launched in June last year with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains. ]]>

BMW Plans To Crank Out 40 New Cars In The Next Three Years
Get ready for a whole new look for BMW as the German automaker plans to launch 40 (yes 4-0) new models in the next three years. The launches will consist of both all new models and updates on current cars. At least a handful will be the first of the Neue Klasse EV models BMW has been teasing for over a year. The first car we'll see is the new iX3 — which is the production version of the Neue Klasse Vision X, Autocar reports. It'll quickly be followed up by the electric 3 Series, according to BMW CEO Oliver Zipse. These new launches will almost certainly serve as a shock to the system for BMW, a company that hit a bit of a rough patch in 2024 in just about everything other than electric vehicle sales. It sold 426,594 EVs across its BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce lineups. That represents a 13.5 percent improvement in 2023. It also equates to about a fifth of BMW Group's total sales for last year, according to Autocar. That is a sizable chunk for a rather nascent sector of the industry. Adding to the good news, one in three Rolls sold last year was a Spectre. Other than that, BMW had a tough year. Its revenue fell 8.4 percent to 142 billion euros, and its earnings before tax fell a whopping 35.8 percent to 10.9 billion euros. Read more: SEMA Was Full Of Wild Concepts In 2002 A big — yet undisclosed — amount of that dip came from dropping sales figures in China because of "persistently low consumer sentiment." That's going to hurt. Still, BMW moved over 100,000 EVs in the country, and the U.S. also hit an all-time high with 50,000 EV sales. Overall, the company sold 2.45 million vehicles in 2024 across the three brands. Unfortunately for BMW, that represented a 4 percent decline over 2023. Of those cars, 2.2 million were BMWs (down 2.3 percent), 245,000 were Minis (down 17.1 percent) and 5,712 were Rolls-Royces (down 5.3 percent), Autocar reports. With numbers down like this across the board, it makes a hell of a lot of sense for BMW to start throwing stuff at the wall with 40 new launches, hoping something sticks. The industry is in a really weird spot right now because most markets are seeing a pretty sizable uptick in EV sales. However, a global tariff war started by President Trump in the U.S. could stifle a lot of that progress. I suppose it's good BMW is planning for every eventuality. Want more like this?
