BJP gave constitutional status to OBC commission, says Bhujbal
Nashik: Veteran NCP politician
Chhagan Bhujbal
on Saturday expressed gratitude towards
BJP
and
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
for granting
constitutional status
to the
OBC commission
, enabling it to assess the socio-economic conditions of other backward communities and implement development measures.
"The struggle for OBC justice began long before India's freedom struggle and continues even today. OBCs are a diverse group of small communities. The British conducted the last caste-based census in 1931, which showed 54% of the population belonged to OBCs. We're still fighting for the same rights today," Bhujbal said, while delivering the Late Vasantrao Nevaskar Memorial Lecture at Devmamledar Yashwantrao Maharaj Patangan at Godaghat in Nashik.
Bhujbal said the Supreme Court issued a crucial ruling regarding the local body elections with pre-2022 reservations. "The Supreme Court's ruling on local body elections with pre-2022 reservations is crucial, enabling OBC representation in national politics. I'm also grateful to PM Modi for announcing a caste-wise census, which will greatly benefit the community," he said.
The veteran NCP politician said tribals and dalits received constitutional reservation based on population.

Bhujbal criticised the treatment of OBCs, citing the Banthia Commission's findings as flawed and based on hearsay rather than a proper census. "Many Mandal Commission recommendations remain unimplemented. We're awaiting certain announcements and hope the govt takes action," he added.
