New Haven man sleuths to figure out how a young seal ended up on city streets
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A New Haven man made it his mission to find out how a young gray seal ended up on a city street last weekend. Chris Ozyck posted his exploration on his 'Seal Sleuthing in New Haven' Facebook page after seeing a picture of the seal posted by New Haven Police on Sunday. Chappy? Vinny? Help name the mysterious seal found in New Haven 'You see this long drag mark and you see the little footprints on either side,' said Ozyck in the Facebook post. He followed the tracks back towards the river, where he believes the seal started his journey. One which took the pup over train tracks and up a manmade ravine under the highway. 'All these downspouts. All the water comes out of each one of those drains,' said Ozyck. 'You can see the ice on them.' He says Sunday's rains would have made the water rise even higher. 'I suspect he was coming in to look for fresh water,' Ozyck said, which is something that certified vet tech Allie Cojocaru called 'normal seal behavior.' As a nonprofit, Mystic Aquarium's rescue team relies heavily on grant funding and donations. It is now trying to get the seal up to a healthy weight so he can be released back into the wild. 'We started offering him whole fish to start encouraging him to eat on his own,' Cojocaru said. New Haven police who visited the gray seal and the rescue team at the aquarium has now started a naming contest for the little guy whose journey has captured a lot of attention. Mysterious seal found in New Haven While News 8 was at the mouth of the ravine where Ozyck believed the seal came out of the river, Ozyck he went to the nearby beach area where he noticed tracks he now believes are seal tracks leading up over the hill and then into the ravine a little further up. He had to revise his theory with another Facebook post. 'Came back out to the confluence of the Quinnipiac and the Mill River with Channel 8,' he said in the new post. Ozyck says he was inspired to find evidence the seal came from the river because that could show seals have come back to the rivers where they once were. 'Having a seal come through here as a symbol I think is just fantastic,' said Ozyck. 'So I had to figure it out.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
