New Irish Writing: Carnations by Lorraine Courtney
New Irish Writing's winning short story entry for April 2025 I sit in the kitchen, my thumb moving across my phone screen in a slow, deliberate rhythm. Left, left, left. The quiet here feels dense, stretching over me and the table and the half-drunk cup of tea that's gone cold. The app glows softly in my hand. Faces blur past – some smiling, some serious, all strangers. Each one a world I could enter. A man with dark eyes and a tight-lipped smile. Left.
