‘A wrong perception is being spread in Tamil Nadu about NEP,' alleges Tamilisai Soundararajan

Former Telangana Governor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tamilisai Soundararajan on Sunday (May 18, 2025) alleged a misleading narrative is being propagated in Tamil Nadu regarding the New National Education Policy (NEP), 2020. Addressing the media in Chennai, Dr. Tamilisai criticised the release of the book 'National Education Policy, 2020 – A Rogue Elephant', authored by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi and unveiled by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday (May 17, 2025.) 'A wrong perception is being spread about the NEP, 2020. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) only claims to develop Tamil language. However only eight students, out of nearly eight lakh who appeared for Class X examinations, had secured a centum in Tamil language. They [DMK leaders] were talking about the vacancies of Tamil teachers in Kendriya Vidyalaya schools. However, as the post of a Tamil teacher remained vacant in a government school at Madurai, students failed to clear that subject,' she said. 'The DMK leaders have been talking about bringing back 'Education' from the Concurrent List to the State List. But, what steps did the DMK take when it was part of the ruling coalition at the Centre for nearly 18 years?' she questioned. Responding to a question about Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) deputy general secretary C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar's recent statement that his party would not form an alliance with the BJP, Dr. Tamilisai said, 'Vijay is the president of the TVK and he has not made any official announcement to that effect.' Further she said there is a pressing need for parties opposed to the DMK to come together.

Opinion Remembering K Kasturirangan: Man and the mission

Every time a person in one of India's 115 'backward' districts logs in to the internet or the weather office issues an alert to farmers, or people receive a timely cyclone warning, the country reaps the benefits of research by scientists at its premier space agency — ISRO. Unlike their counterparts in the US or the former Soviet Union, India's science planners did not envision the country's space programme as an extension of the country's geopolitical ambitions. India, instead, used its satellites as developmental and modernising forces. K Kasturirangan, who died on Friday at the age of 84, played a defining role in this endeavour. From being part of the team that launched India's first satellite, Aryabhatta, to preparing the groundwork for the missions to Mars and the Moon, the astrophysicist left his mark on virtually every landmark development in the country's space odyssey. As ISRO's head from 1994 to 2003, he steered the agency during a particularly challenging period when India faced strict international restrictions on access to technology. Early in his career, Kasturirangan was mentored by Vikram Sarabhai. The doyen of India's space programme believed that funding constraints shouldn't restrict India's technology ambitions. Sarabhai's mantra, 'doing more with less', was at the core of the space technology developed during Kasturirangan's leadership of the agency. After the 1998 nuclear tests, India was denied the crucial cryogenic technology without which a well-developed space programme could not be built. Kasturirangan, therefore, set great store on indigenisation. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, perfected under his stewardship of ISRO, became a reliable launcher, whose affordability attracted international clients. Sarabhai's influence was writ large on ISRO's remote sensing initiatives that aimed to provide the benefits of India's space research to farmers, fishing communities, and participants in the health and education sectors. At the same time, Kasturirangan was also a leading voice in the post-liberalisation science policy firmament which believed that India of the 1990s was poised to join the ranks of space superpowers. The fact that the missions to Mars and the Moon cost a fraction of other global interplanetary missions is a testament to the innovations of Kasturirangan's team. Kasturirangan was respected, across political circles, not just as a space scientist but as a scholar who understood the links between knowledge and society. In 2012, the UPA government chose him to head a committee to deal with the complex question of nature-human interaction in the Western Ghats. Five years later, he chaired a panel set up by the Narendra Modi government to draft the New National Education Policy. Kasturirangan will be remembered as a scholar who played a leading role in India's ascent in the global knowledge economy.

Former ISRO chief passes away

Bengaluru: Former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan who was at the helm of the space agency for nearly a decade, passed away in Bengaluru on Friday. He was 84 and is survived by two sons, family sources said, adding that he was suffering from age-related ailments for the past few months. "He left for heavenly abode this morning at his residence in Bengaluru. His body will be kept at Raman Research Institute (RRI) for paying last respects on April 27," officials said. President Droupadi Murmu condoled his death: '(I am) Saddened to learn that Dr Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan is no more. As head of ISRO, he played a stellar role in the evolution of India's space programme.' Condoling his death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on 'X', 'I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr K Kasturirangan, a towering figure in India's scientific and educational journey. His visionary leadership and selfless contribution to the nation will always be remembered. He served ISRO with great diligence, steering India's space programme to new heights, for which we also received global recognition. His leadership also witnessed ambitious satellite launches and focused on innovation.' Taking to "X", Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the death of renowned astrophysicist Kasturirangan, who raised India's flag in the field of space technology, is shocking. Dr Kasturirangan, hailing from Karnataka, had immense love and concern for our state, he said. The space scientist served for nine long years as the ISRO chairperson before demitting his office in August 2003. For his exemplary work he was awarded Padma Vibhushan in the year 2000. Chairperson of drafting committee on New National Education Policy (NEP), Kasturirangan had also served as Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University and Chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission.
