Olympic swimming great Ian Thorpe robbed of watches, jewellery
[SYDNEY] Australian Olympic swimming great Ian Thorpe has had watches, jewellery and sentimental items worth nearly US$100,000 stolen from his Sydney home, his manager said on Friday. His Olympic medals, which include five golds, were not taken and there were no obvious signs of a break-in, Thorpe's manager James Erskine said. The estimated cost of the stolen items was about A$150,000 (S$126,090), Sydney radio station 2GB said. 'He called up his insurers, they said go and make a police report,' Erskine told 2GB. Thorpe reported the matter to New South Wales Police on Thursday, sparking an investigation, but there was no further information, police said in a statement. Thorpe, nicknamed 'Thorpedo', won five gold medals, three silvers and one bronze. He retired aged 24 in 2006 before an ill-fated comeback attempt saw him fail to make the cut for London 2012. AFP

Family of Pauline Fitzsimons claim NSW police officer told her of a 'safe way' through floods and escorted her toward Coffs Harbour before being swept away
The heartbroken family of a Sydney woman who was found dead after driving through floodwaters has disputed New South Wales Police's account of her death. The body of Pauline Fitzsimons was recovered on Thursday after she got into trouble the previous night in Brooklana, west of Coffs Harbour on the Mid North Coast. Assistant Commissioner David Waddell on Thursday said the 60-year-old had spoken to an officer west of Dorrigo and travelled together in a "convoy" towards Coffs Harbour when they reached floodwaters at Coramba Road near Wild Cattle Creek Bridge. The officer advised he would not be continuing due to the water over the road given he was driving a BMW. He checked the water level and it was about up to the ankles. The policeman gave the woman his number before he turned back, urging caution. The woman - driving a four-wheel-drive - made the decision to continue. About 30 minutes later, she called the officer to tell him she was in trouble at Brooklana. Search crews were deployed to the scene but they could not find her. Asst Comm Waddell on Thursday said the policeman who assisted Ms Fitzsimons was left "very traumatised" after learning authorities had found her body in her car. She was one of four people to die during the "one-in-500-year" flood". However, Ms Fitzsimons' son Tiernan Fitzsimons argued the story is inaccurate. He claimed the officer "guided her into floodwaters and left her to her own devices". "We are deeply saddened by the media reports. Hours before she passed, she informed a family member, a police officer told her he knew a safe way through to Coffs Harbour and was escorting her through," Mr Fitzsimons said in the statement to Nine News. 'The idea that our mother was a reckless driver is a terrible lie, and (we) do not want her to be remembered as such.' NSW Police said it will investigate the "full circumstances surrounding the incident", including the officer's interaction with Ms Fitzsimons as well as the weather conditions. Wild weather disappears but warnings remain The weather system that dropped more than half a metre of rain in parts of the Mid North Coast, inundating homes and businesses, has moved away from Sydney. The Harbour City copped a severe drenching from Thursday into Friday morning, but it cleared up late morning and by early afternoon the sun was out, surprisingly. Despite the dramatic easing in conditions and clear conditions expected for the weekend, a number of rivers remain at high levels as floodwaters begin to slowly recede. Low-lying areas along the Manning River were told throughout Friday to shelter in place and move to higher ground due to the threat of inundation. Coopernook, parts of Taree, Dumaresq Island, Manning Point, Croki, low-lying areas of Wingham, Oxley Island and Mitchells Point remain under emergency warning. Those around Tuggerah Lakes including Budgewoi Lake, Lake Munmorah, Tacoma South and Chittaway Point were advised Friday afternoon to find high ground. While 'watch and act' alerts remain for parts of Cobbitty to prepare to evacuate.

Shocking moment man tries to climb onto cruise ship using mooring ropes and is arrested
A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly trying to climb onboard a cruise ship via its mooring ropes in Sydney, Australia. New South Wales Police Force reportedly took the unnamed man into custody following the incident. It occurred at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney's Rocks suburb on Saturday May 17. Video shows the man swinging on the ropes as he allegedly attempts to board the ship. He was later picked up in a NSW police boat and taken to the local police station. The man has reportedly been charged with three offences including entering a cleared zone when not screened and entering land-side and water-side restricted areas without authorisation. He is now on bail but is scheduled to appear at Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court on June 11. A police statement at the time said: 'At about 2:55pm today (Saturday 17 May 2025) police were called to a boat terminal at The Rocks, following reports a man had attempted to climb onto a cruise ship via a mooring line. 'On arrival, police attached to Marine Area Command found the man suspended over the water from the mooring line.' In two videos posted by TikTok user @ the man appears to be swinging from the ropes. He then appears to be pulled into the waiting police boat after he descends from the ropes. The man appears to be wearing a slider-type shoe as he scales the ship's ropes.

Urgent manhunt for violent yob after he attacks two immigration officers
A manhunt is underway for a thug who stabbed two immigration officials who were taking him to an airport. The 28-year-old man, who police say is a Tongan National, was being transported to the hub - where it is understood he was supposed to be sent on a flight out of Australia - when he assaulted the employees. The victims; a 54-year-old man and a 36-year-old man, were dashed to hospital. The horror happened in James Ruse Drive in Clyde, Sydney, at around 3.40am local time (6.40pm Wednesday UK time) shortly after the Australian Border Force staff had left an address in Villawood, Canterbury-Bankstown for Sydney Airport, a drive which should take less than 30 minutes. But during it, the Tongan National attacked the men, reportedly with a knife, leaving the older man with a neck wound and his colleague with a cheek injury. They are in hospital with injuries thought not to be life threatening. The assailant, who is known to police is now on the run, police say. New South Wales Police Superintendent Simon Glasser said: "The male is known to frequent the Mount Pritchard and south-west Sydney areas and was last tracked by dog squad toward Harris Park. We ask members of the public to be vigilant ... this was obviously a violent offence that occurred. We ask the public to be wary. If they they see the male they should contact us not to approach him." Immigration is hot topic abroad and here at the moment. Keir Starmer had divided opinion in the UK by this weekwarning the UK could become a "nation of strangers" as he unveiled plans to tackle the matter. These include stricter English language requirements, an end of overseas recruitment for social care workers and stricter rules for students. And the man in Sydney is a Tongan national, New South Wales Police confirmed. He's described as being of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance, with a tanned complexion, a large build, about 180cm tall with black hair, dark eyes and is unshaven. At the time, he was wearing a black coat, black track trousers and black and white trainers. Detectives recovered a sharp metal object from the scene but are appealing for information from the public to snag the yob. A spokesman for New South Wales Police said: "Officers attached to Cumberland Police Area Command, with assistance of specialist police including the Dog Unit are continuing to search the two injured men are being treated at Westmead Hospital; police have been told the injuries are not considered to be serious." In Australia, migrants only have to have lived in the country for four years on a visa before they can begin to apply for citizenship. Currently, foreign students in UK universities can stay on for two years after they finish their degree, via the graduate visa route. The new changes will reduce this period to just 18 months. Graduates in Australia, though, can stay up to twice as long on a graduate visa, from two to three years.
