Sweden charges jihadi over Jordanian pilot burned to death

In this courtroom sketch, defendants look out from a specially designed glass box during the trial for the Brussels attacks (AP) Prosecutors in Sweden on Tuesday said they had indicted a convicted Swedish man for his suspected role in the 2014 capture and execution of a Jordanian pilot by the "Islamic State" (IS) militant group in Syria. The suspect is accused of helping to force the pilot into a metal cage ahead of one of the jihadist group's most infamous murders. What do we know about the case? The 32-year-old Swedish citizen Osama K., originally from the city of Malmo, is suspected of helping in the execution of a captured Jordanian pilot while fighting for IS. Prosecutors said the suspect is to be charged with aggravated war crimes and terrorist crimes committed in Syria. They have been unable to work out the exact day of the murder, but the probe has identified the location where it took place. "The investigation has shown that the man, armed and masked, together with others forced the pilot into a metal cage," prosecutors said. "The cage was subsequently set on fire by one of the co-perpetrators, and the pilot died as a consequence of the fire." "This bestial murder, in which a prisoner was burned alive in a cage, was staged in a carefully produced video that was broadcast around the world. Its publication marked an unprecedented escalation in the Islamic State group's violent propaganda," said prosecutor Henrik Olin. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Killer New Toyota 4Runner Is Utter Perfection (Take A Look) MorninJoy Undo The defendant's lawyer, Petra Eklund, told the AFP news agency that her client admitted to being present at the scene but disputed the allegation. "He acknowledges having been present at that place during the event but claims not to have acted in the manner described by the prosecutors in the account of the facts," she said. The royal Jordanian air force pilot had been captured by the Islamic State after his jet was downed near Raqqa, the de facto capital of IS's self-declared "caliphate" — on December 24, 2014. Images of the death were disseminated online by the jihadi group. Involvement in Paris, Brussels attacks K joined ISIS in Syria in 2014 and later returned to Europe, prosecutors said. In 2022, he was sentenced in France to 30 years in prison for complicity in the November 2015 Paris attacks that left 130 dead. In 2023, he was given a life sentence in Belgium for his role in the 2016 Brussels attacks that killed 32 people. France agreed on March 12 to hand over K. to Sweden for nine months to allow for investigation and trial. He will be returned to France afterward to continue serving his sentence. Proceedings are scheduled to begin on June 4 at Stockholm District Court.

He called himself lucky to become a "star" despite being surrounded by many talented and intelligent children during his theatre days. "I was a happy child. I was a parrot, not cage, but they taught me, and I repeated. ‘American jobs come first': Trump throws cold water over Apple's Make in India plans

President Donald Trump has warned that Apple will face a 25% tariff on iPhones manufactured overseas and sold in the US, signalling that the company's move to expand production in India may backfire. 'I had an understanding with Tim that he wouldn't be doing this. He said he's going to India to build plants. I said, 'That's okay, but you're not going to sell into here without tariffs,'' Trump said in the Oval Office on Friday, referencing a conversation with Apple CEO Tim Cook. The statement came during the signing of executive orders on nuclear energy. 'We're talking about the iPhone . If they're going to sell it in America, I want it to be built in the United States,' said Trump. Tariff threat expands beyond Apple Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Killer New Toyota 4Runner Is Utter Perfection (Take A Look) MorninJoy Undo Although Apple was initially the focus of Trump's comments, the president widened the scope of the tariff warning to include other smartphone makers. 'It would be anybody that makes that product, otherwise it wouldn't be fair,' he said, naming South Korea's Samsung and China's Huawei. The tariffs are expected to take effect by the end of June 2025. In a social media post on Friday, Trump reiterated his stance: 'I expect their iPhones that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else. If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the US. American jobs come first!' Live Events Pressure on Cook to build in the US Trump's remarks come after a recent trip to Doha , where he reportedly urged Cook to strengthen Apple's manufacturing footprint in the US. He cited India's high tariff structure as a barrier for American companies, despite the country's recent offer to remove tariffs on US imports. Build here,'' Trump said. He called India's tariff regime one of the highest in the world, making it a difficult market for US companies, and argued that domestic manufacturing must take precedence. Relocating production may raise costs Addressing the tariff issue during Apple's earnings call, Cook clarified that tariffs are tied to where products are made. Industry experts warn that moving iPhone manufacturing to the US would substantially increase production costs due to higher wages and overheads. According to analysts, if Apple attempts to pass these additional costs to consumers, the price of an iPhone could exceed $3,000 , potentially affecting demand. Moreover, shifting its supply chain to the US would require considerable time and investment, as Apple's current production network is deeply entrenched in Asia.

Stir against 'Manipur' being erased from bus turns violent

IMPHAL: Five protesters were hospitalised Sunday after scuffling with security forces near Raj Bhavan in Imphal as the public agitation demanding an apology from governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla over "Manipur" being scraped off the windshield of a state transport corporation bus on May 20 lapsed into violent unrest. Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters converging on the historic Kangla Gate, around 150 metres from the Raj Bhavan gates, when they refused to retreat. The influential Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), which spearheaded the protest, had given the governor 48 hours to publicly apologise for what it said was an insult to the state and its people. "The governor continues to disregard the sentiments of the people by his silence. He and his administration have tarnished the state's historical and cultural legacy... The inquiry commission set up by the govt to probe what happened (at Gwaltabi) is not enough as it does not mention anything about penalising those who were involved," a protester said. A Manipur state transport bus ferrying journalists to Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul district was allegedly stopped at Gwaltabi checkpoint and ordered to remove "Manipur" from the windshield. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Killer New Toyota 4Runner Is Utter Perfection (Take A Look) MorninJoy Undo Amid outrage, the home department set up a two-member inquiry committee to "examine facts and circumstances involving security personnel and the Manipur state transport bus". A COCOMI delegation is scheduled to travel to New Delhi to meet MHA officials on Tuesday to push for completion of "pending political and security processes" necessitated by the ethnic crisis. COCOMI condemned the use of "mock bombs and tear gas on non-violent protesters, particularly women, during Sunday's demonstration". It said, "The deployment of such aggressive crowd-control measures against unarmed civilians, many of whom were mothers and elderly women, is unbecoming of a democratic and sensitive administration."

Sarfaraz Khan dropped from England Tests: Ajit Agarkar says 'sometimes it's about good decisions'

Sarfaraz Khan (Getty Images) Shubman Gill was officially named India's new Test captain on Saturday for the upcoming five-match series against England, beginning June 20. The 25-year-old batter takes over the reins from Rohit Sharma , who recently announced his retirement from the format — a decision soon followed by batting great Virat Kohli . 'We discussed every option that's there, over the last year or so, and we have looked at Shubman various times,' said chief selector Ajit Agarkar. 'We have taken a lot of feedback from the dressing room. We are hopeful he is the guy — he is a terrific player and our best wishes to him.' Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. His previous leadership experience includes captaining the T20 side during the 2024 tour of Zimbabwe when senior players were rested. Among the major talking points in the squad was the return of Karun Nair, who makes a comeback to the national setup after nearly eight years. Nair, who last featured in a Test in 2017, was dropped soon after becoming only the second Indian to score a triple century in the format. On Sarfaraz's exclusion, Agarkar said: 'Sometimes you just have to make good decisions. Sarfaraz, I know he got a 100 in the first Test and then didn't get runs. Sometimes it's decisions the team management takes.' 'At the moment, Karun has scored heaps of runs in domestic, has played a bit of Test cricket, played a bit of county cricket. With Virat not there, clearly we're lacking a bit of experience. We felt his experience could help." India Test squad for England tour: Shubman Gill to lead, Rishabh Pant his deputy Karun, backed by Agarkar for his experience and domestic form, returns to the Test fold after a strong 2024–25 season. His inclusion is seen as a move to add stability to the middle order in the absence of senior pros.
