Adirondack hikers report friend dead on 'bad trip'
NORTH ELBA, N.Y. (ABC22/FOX44) – A pair of High Peaks hikers in Essex County were high on a little more than the mountains' altitude.
New York Forest Rangers responded to a call on 4,098-foot Cascade Mountain in Essex County Saturday morning. Two hikers had called 911 saying the third person in their party had died. When they met the mountain's summit steward, they added that they were lost as well. The steward quickly figured out that the two hikers were in an altered mental state.
Rangers eventually found the third person sober and uninjured and walked with them back to the group's campsite. The original pair of hikers, who had apparently eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms, were taken to a waiting ambulance and New York State Police unit.

The Adirondacks' Summit Stewardship Program sends professional and volunteer stewards to the summits of mountains around the region to perform scientific research, educate and aid passing hikers, and maintain trails. The program has grown from employing just two stewards in 1990 to five professional stewards, three people working in botany, and twenty volunteers in 2024.
