Performers call at Wales' biggest free outdoor arts festival
Big Splash, presented by The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre, is set to return to Newport this summer. The festival, which draws thousands of visitors to the city, features live music, street theatre, dance, crafts, workshops, and activities for all the family across two days, free of charge. The organisers are keen to hear from choirs, dance groups, bands, poetry collectives, and solo acts who want to be part of the celebrations. Sally-Anne Evans, community arts development officer at The Riverfront Theatre, said: "We've always championed local talent as a core part of the festival. "Our community callout is an open invitation to groups and individuals to be part of the experience and perform alongside professional acts." Performers will have the opportunity to showcase their talents on the Celebrate Stage, Dock Stage, or at Usk Plaza. (Image: KIRSTEN MCTERNAN) The stages will be live on Saturday 19 July between 11am and 5pm, and Sunday 20 July between 12pm and 4:30pm. All performances must be family-friendly and suitable for all ages. Big Splash is proud to represent the broad and diverse communities of Newport and South Wales. Performers of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with a particular welcome to Welsh language acts, artists with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ performers, and members of global majority communities. Applications close on Sunday, June 1. For more information on how to apply, visit the Newport Live website.

UK folk-rock band Steeleye Span set to perform in Newport
Steeleye Span will be playing at The Riverfront Theatre on Wednesday, May 7. Founded in 1969, the band is known for pioneering electric folk music and shaping the genre for more than 50 years. Their debut album, Hark! The Village Wait, set the stage for their unique sound. The band's latest release, The Green Man Collection, features tracks from recent albums and new versions of three classic songs. The title track, The Green Man, is a song by Bob Johnson, a member throughout the 70s, which was lost for 40 years. The song discusses climate change, a prescient topic for its time. The band's line-up for this tour includes founding member Maddy Prior, along with Liam Genockey, Julian Littman, Roger Carey, Andrew "Spud" Sinclair, and the newest addition, Athena Octavia. The band's upcoming album, Conflict, will be available exclusively during the tour. The concert is expected to be an exciting night for fans of the genre. Tickets can be purchased via the Newport Live website.
