Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announces campaign for Georgia governor's race
ATLANTA () — Atlanta's former mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, has officially thrown her hat into the 2026 Georgia governor's race. In a launch video posted today, Bottoms recalled her time in the mayor's office and laid out her key campaign points. 'This is a defining moment for Georgia and for our country,' Bottoms said. 'With chaos in Washington, Georgians need a leader who will stand up for them. I'm running for governor to fight for Georgia families and deliver the leadership they deserve. In the video, she also criticized the current Trump administration and successive Georgia Republican governors who have failed to expand Medicaid. Report reveals new details in Savannah kidnapping case
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — An incident report from Savannah Police Department (SPD) revealed new details related to the Thursday kidnapping of a toddler. Three-year-old Leilani Elliot was reported 'found and safe' by SPD Friday morning. She was reported missing and in extreme danger Thursday morning. Police told News 3, her mother, Jessy Elliot, took her without permission following a supervised visit at Bright House on Wheaton Street. The 32-year-old was arrested Friday morning in Camden County. The toddler is in the foster care system. According to the report, the visit Thursday morning at the family support center was supervised. An employee was in a separate room of the home and was watching the mother and daughter through surveillance cameras, the report reads. The employee told police they saw Jessy pick up her daughter in the living room, peak around the corner at the front door and walk out onto the porch. Jessy was then seen running with her daughter towards East Broad Street, according to SPD Sgt. Aaron Washington. '[Jessy Elliot] had been speaking on what she was going to do, from neighbors and individuals that she had associated with,' Sgt. Washington said. 'You could tell she wanted to seize that opportunity and she did.' The child was believed to be in extreme danger. Sgt. Washington says the Amber Alert was delayed due to the department not having the tag number of Elliot's Nissan Altima. That alert was sent out late Thursday afternoon. Jail records show that Elliot has a criminal history with charges ranging from cruelty to children and drug possession. Police were able to return the child to her foster parents. Washington is grateful for this outcome. 'It's a big relief,' Sgt. Washington said. News 3 was told Friday that the spokesperson for Brightside Child and Family Advocacy is out of town. Our staff reached out to the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). We were sent the following statement, 'DHS/DFCS is bound by both state and federal law to protect the privacy of the people we serve. As such, we are unable to comment on the specifics of any child welfare cases.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Savannah locals and tourists watch as Pope Leo XIV is announced
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — People gathered at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist smiled as Pope Leo XIV was announced on Thursday. Savannah Diocese Bishop Stephen D. Parkes called it a great day for the church and the world. He told News 3 he actually met Pope Leo in Rome in the fall of 2023 when he was still a cardinal. 'He was a very nice man. He seemed to be very, very kind. He seemed to have a great heart and a love for people,' Bishop Parkes said. 'I think he's somebody that we can relate to, somebody that knows what our struggles are, what our challenges are… not just here in Savannah, not just here in the United States, but throughout the world. I think that's pretty exciting.' WSAV was inside the cathedral when former Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost's name was revealed. 'We've just received good news that a pope has been elected and he happens to be American. We're especially happy about that,' Ann Slifka said. The white smoke from the Vatican indicated the selection and cathedral visitors could be seen checking their phones, anxiously waiting for his name to be released. 'I think it's wonderful. It's awesome. I'm surprised, especially being from the U.S.,' Lisa Carswell said. Pope Leo spoke to the tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square, 'God loves us, all of us, evil will not prevail. We are all in the hands of God. Without fear, united, hand in hand with God and among ourselves, we will go forward. We are disciples of Christ, Christ goes before us, and the world needs His light. Humanity needs Him like a bridge to reach God and His love. You help us to build bridges with dialogue and encounter so we can all be one people always in peace.' 'I think that there are faith-based characteristics that bring all people together and we can agree on the commonality of that to promote humanity,' Slifka said. Many people shared that they were reflecting on the legacy of Pope Francis during this transition. 'We hope for openness, inclusion, hopefully bringing together people of all nations. That's what we're all hopeful for,' Slifka said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
