Schoolchildren share special messages for Father's Day supplement in the News & Star
Schoolchildren from across the region have shared special messages to celebrate Father's Day. Pupils from 12 local schools sent messages for their fathers and father-figures which will be be published by the News & Star in a Father's Day supplement on Wednesday June 11. The supplement is part of a call out for messages across the north of England which saw 90 schools taking part, sharing 14,000 messages. It will feature messages from pupils of Our Lady and St Patrick's Catholic Primary School, Ewanrigg Junior School, Beckstone Primary School, Orgill Primary School, St Bridget's Catholic Primary School, Longtown Primary School, Wreay CofE Primary School, Crosby-on-Eden CofE School, Lowca Community School, Moor Row Community Primary School, Shankhill CofE Primary School and Stainton CofE Primary School Families of the schools involved in the initiative will have the opportunity to order copies in advance to be delivered to them. The News & Star is just one of 11 titles across the north of England celebrating Father's Day with dedications from school children including The Mail, The Northern Echo and the Lancashire Telegraph. Ten finalists in News & Star's 'Best Chippy 2025' award revealed
THE ten finalists in the News & Star's 'Best Chippy 2025' award have been revealed. These finalists have been chosen by News & Star readers after a week of online nominations, which started on Monday, May 19, and concluded on Saturday, May 30. The ten finalists who will all be in the running to be crowned News & Star 'Best Chippy Bar 2025' are: Caddy's Fish and Chips, Newtown Road, Carlisle Central Chippy, Central Avenue, Carlisle CJ's Chip Shop, High Street, Wigton Cross Quays Chip Shop, King Street, Maryport Dante's Fish and Chips, Shady Grove Road, Carlisle Fontanas, London Road, Carlisle Morton Fryer, Stonegarth, Carlisle Paolo's Fish and Chips, Denton Street, Carlisle Superfish, Workington, Carlisle The Dalston Fryer, Dalston, Carlisle News & Star readers will now be able to vote for their favourite finalist by picking up a copy of the daily newspaper between Monday, June 2, and Sunday, June 14. In addition, we will be highlighting the shortlisted chip shop in our competition in the News & Star. Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues. After this final voting stage has concluded, the winner will be crowned as the News & Star's 'Best Chippy 2025' during the week commencing Monday, June 23.

Home Farm Butchers, Aspatria, up for 'Best Butchers 2025' award
We're highlighting the shortlisted butchers, delis and farm shops in our competition in the News & Star. Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues. Home Farm Butchers has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of ten finalists in its 'Best Butchers, Delis or Farm Shops 2025' award. The small shop is located in Brayton Park in Aspatria, near Wigton. It was set up just after the pandemic and takes 'great pride in field to fork eating.' Harry Ward, the owner of Brayton Park and the butchery business, told the News & Star it was 'fabulous' to be nominated. READ MORE: Cranstons Brampton nominated for 'Best Butchers 2025' award He said: 'It's absolutely amazing, we're just a small shop in Aspatria, so it's fabulous to be recognised.' Home Farm offers a variety of products, from fresh meat to ready meals. Harry added: 'We sell fresh meat which has been raised on the family farm and vegetables and herbs grown in our Walled Garden. 'We also bring local businesses into our shop. I think the customers like this because they're shopping locally, supporting local businesses and they don't have to travel as far. 'Our busiest period is now with the BBQ season, and obviously, Christmas is very busy too. It gets quieter in January and February when people are sick of food!' They are open from Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30am. News & Star readers will now be able to vote for their favourite finalist by picking up a copy of the daily newspaper between Monday, May 5, and Saturday, May 17.
