Maple Leafs Coach Assigns Blame for Game 5 Loss to Panthers

The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped their third straight game on Wednesday night, falling 6-1 at home to the Florida Panthers and placing themselves on the brink of another early postseason exit. Head coach Craig Berube offered no excuses and didn't let anyone on the team, including himself, escape blame for the loss. Advertisement "Tonight, it wasn't a good game for anybody. Anybody. All of us — was not a good game," Berube said. The Leafs were outskated, outworked and outshot from the start, with the Panthers setting the tone early and never looking back. Asked to explain what went wrong, Berube pointed to everything. "We just played slow … they were hungrier," Berube said. "It's hard to explain it. We all need to be better. Myself included." Florida opened the scoring late in the first period and piled on five more goals through the midway point of the third. Goalie Joseph Woll, starting in place of injured starter Anthony Stolarz, was pulled after allowing five goals on 25 shots. Advertisement Nicholas Robertson was the lone Leafs player to score, 18 minutes, 54 seconds into the third frame. "You can't start the game that way; that's a big thing for me. It sets a tone for the game," Berube said. "I don't have an answer for you as to why. "It's sports. Things happen." Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nicholas Robertson (89) and Florida Panthers defenseman Nate Schmidt during a E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images Toronto fans booed the Leafs off the ice and began heading for the exits well before the final horn, with at least one jersey tossed onto the ice. Berube refused to blame a specific line or player. Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev, however, took full responsibility for the loss while addressing the media after the game. 'I'll take responsibility,' Tanev said. 'I need to be better. If I'm a minus player, we're probably not going to win the game. Advertisement 'It's on me. I'll take responsibility for the game.' Game 6 is set for 8 p.m. ET Friday in Florida as the Panthers look to return to the Eastern Conference Final for the third straight season. Leafs defeat Blackhawks, slip into first place in Atlantic

February 24 - Nicholas Robertson scored two goals and Jake McCabe and Chris Tanev each had a goal and an assist to lift the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-2 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. Toronto overtook Florida atop the Atlantic Division by one point in winning the opener of a four-game road trip. Robertson's second career multi-goal game backed a 25-save effort from goaltender Joseph Woll. Chicago opened the scoring in the closing seconds of the first period on a goal by Teuvo Teravainen but was unable to sustain the momentum en route to its sixth loss in the past seven games. Tyler Bertuzzi assisted on both goals for the Blackhawks. A three-goal second period proved the difference for the Maple Leafs. Robertson had not scored since Jan. 18, but his first of the night tied the game at 1 at 7:09 of the second. He converted a one-timer in the slot off a feed from Max Domi, who also had two assists. Toronto took the lead at 9:45 on McCabe's blast from the left point off a faceoff win. Robertson then put the Maple Leafs ahead 3-1 with 15 seconds remaining in the second. Domi outraced Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones for a loose puck down the right wall, then slid a pass from outside the right circle to a waiting Robertson in front of the net. Chicago answered just eight seconds later when Philipp Kurashev beat Woll from outside the crease off a weaving setup from Frank Nazar. The Maple Leafs restored a two-goal lead at 12:07 of the third period. Tanev sent a wrist shot from the right circle through traffic and past Chicago goalie Arvid Soderblom. The Blackhawks grabbed a 1-0 lead with 11 seconds left in the first. Teravainen scored a power-play goal off the rebound of a one-timer to record his 500th career point. The Maple Leafs' Pontus Holmberg provided the final margin with an empty-net goal at 18:28 of the third period. Soderblom made 25 saves for the Blackhawks. Toronto secured a sweep of the season series. The host Maple Leafs routed the visiting Blackhawks 4-1 on Dec. 2.

Robertson brothers combine for 5 goals in the 2nd period of 2 road wins

CHICAGO (AP) — It was quite a Sunday for the Robertson brothers. Especially in the second period. Jason Robertson scored three times to help the Dallas Stars to a 4-3 win at the New York Islanders. Nicholas Robertson had two goals in Toronto's 5-2 win at the Chicago Blackhawks. The Robertsons scored each of their goals in the middle period. 'Yeah, it's exciting, and I think it's exciting for our parents,' Nicholas Robertson said. 'They got (two TVs) so they're jumping off the couch five times tonight. So it's good to see him do well, and it's nice to have a good game, too.' Nicholas Robertson, 23, ended a nine-game scoring drought. He nearly had another goal with 7:23 left in the second, but his shot was swept off the goal line by Blackhawks defenseman T.J. Brodie. Robertson has never recorded a hat trick in the NHL. 'I was thinking about it, but another time hopefully,' he said. Jason Robertson's first goal lifted Dallas to a 2-1 lead 8:48 into the second. After Kyle Palmieri responded for New York, Robertson added two power-play goals. Jason Robertson, 25, who has 13 goals and seven assists in his last 16 games, said he was excited for his brother. 'I think he needs the goals more than I do,' Robertson said with a chuckle. 'I think he works so hard. ... We were training last week together, so it's great to see him getting rewarded. 'I think as a family it's a great night for us.' Nicholas Robertson made the most of two nice passes from Max Domi. He scored a power-play goal from the low slot at 7:09, and then added his 10th of the season with 15 seconds left in the period. 'Those guys know how to score,' Domi said of the Robertson brothers. 'I don't know what's in the water where they grew up, but they know how to score, for sure.' ___ ___
