NHL Fines Senators And Cousins For Warmup Conduct Toward Maple Leafs: Coaches Didn't Seem Bothered

The NHL fined the Ottawa Senators $25,000 and center Nick Cousins $2,083.33 for unsportsmanlike conduct tied to an incident in warmups before Game 3 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The NHL investigated an incident that occurred during the warmup ahead of Game 3, according to TSN's Darren Dreger and Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. In it, Senators players, including left winger Nick Cousins, shot pucks at Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz. The Senators' fine goes to the NHL Foundation, while Cousins' fine, which was the maximum allowable under the collective bargaining agreement, goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. Earlier on Friday, Senators coach Travis Green and Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube weighed in on the investigation between the two teams. "It's an active investigation. I don't know if I should be commenting on that now," Green said, getting a few laughs from the media in attendance. He said he was kidding. 'I saw the video,' Green said. 'Nick Cousins and Stolarz have played together, he's probably trying to laugh at him or make a joke or get him off his game. It is what it is.' Cousins and Stolarz were teammates when playing for the Florida Panthers and won the Stanley Cup together last season. They were also teammates in the early stages of their careers with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2016-17. Berube had less to say on the incident. 'I don't think it's anything,' he said. Berube even recalled warming up before a game for the Flyers in 1992 when his teammate, Keith Acton, fired pucks at the New York Rangers' net throughout the warmup to wind them up. Whatever happened with the Sens and Leafs on Thursday, it didn't end like the brouhaha between the Flyers and Rangers. The investigation doesn't seem to concern either side of the Battle of Ontario, and it's seen as a joke or light-hearted teasing if anything. If Cousins was looking to get Stolarz off his game, it didn't really work, as the Leafs goaltender stopped 18 of 20 shots the Senators threw at him. It was Stolarz's 11th straight win dating back to the end of the regular season. In that stretch, Stolarz has recorded a.944 save percentage, 1.53 goals-against average and three shutouts. Game 4 of this series will take place on Saturday. Toronto has a 3-0 series lead over Ottawa. Tim Stutzle and Shane Pinto each scored their first playoff goals, while David Perron had a goal, and Linus Ullmark made 31 saves for the Senators. It has been an incredibly tight series, with three of the four games going into overtime. It's in the stressful minutes that the Maple Leafs have proven to be the better team. Game 1 of the series has been the lone one not to make it to overtime. The Maple Leafs won the opener 6-2. A sobering statistic for the Maple Leafs is their 1-12 record in close-out games in the playoffs since 2017. It may help the Maple Leafs' confidence to learn that the Senators came in having missed the playoffs for seven straight seasons before this one. Nick Cousins: Nick Cousins and Ottawa Senators penalized after intense warmup encounter with Toronto Maple Leafs

A shocking twist at the NHL playoffs witnessed Brian Nicholas (Nick) Cousins and the Ottawa Senators being penalized after an intense warmup encounter—now dubbed ' Warmupgate '—before Game 3 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Ottawa Senators centre Nick Cousins was fined $2,083.33, the maximum in the present CBA, while the Ottawa Senators were fined $25,000. This decision came after Cousins was caught on video shooting a puck at Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz during warmups. Ottawa Senators fined as tensions boil over with Toronto Maple Leafs Emotions had been high between the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs long before the puck foul. In Game 1, Ottawa forward Ridly Greig hit Anthony Stolarz's lower leg, setting things up for high emotions. Game 2 saw some revenge, as Anthony Stolarz and Ridly Greig exchanged slashes, which left the two players with offsetting penalties. The NHL knew that these rising incidents were taking place, and the actions of Nick Cousins during warmup were deemed unsportsmanlike. League spokesmen added the fines were necessary in keeping discipline and enforcing standards of behavior in crucial playoff games. Cousins had only returned to the lineup after a long stint on long-term injured reserve due to a knee injury. Through his activation on April 13, he's played in two of three playoff contests but received limited ice time, averaging under 10 minutes per game. Anthony Stolarz responds to Ottawa Senators' toughness Following Game 3, Anthony Stolarz confessed to having spoken to the officials before the game. 'Watch my back, and I'll behave,' Stolarz pledged, admitting the fragile peace he was trying to keep. Unfortunately, the pre-game fight with Nick Cousins contradicted that and showed just how deep the vitriol between the two clubs ran. The Ottawa Senators, at 3-0 down in the first-round playoff series , are on the verge of being eliminated heading into Game 4. NHL Announces Punishment for Senators Before Game 4 vs. Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs hold a 3-0 series lead over the Ottawa Senators after their Game 3 first-round win on Thursday night. For the second straight game, the Leafs found the back of the net in overtime, and this time it came off the stick of defenseman Simon Benoit. Before the game started, a situation occurred during warm-ups that has since escalated. Ottawa forward Nick Cousins skated by Toronto goalie Anthony Stolarz, who was getting loose in front of the penalty box. Advertisement Cousins intentionally shot a puck toward Stolarz. The reason he did that is unknown, but it's worth noting that the two won the Stanley Cup last season together with the Florida Panthers. They also played on the same AHL team—Lehigh Valley Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers AHL affiliate). After review, the NHL announced that it has "fined the Ottawa Senators $25,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct." Additionally, the "National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has fined Ottawa's Nick Cousins $2,083.33, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for unsportsmanlike conduct." Advertisement Cousins missed Game 1 as a healthy scratch, but took the ice for both Game 2 and Game 3. In those games, he didn't make much of an impact, recording no points and just one shot on less than 12 minutes of ice time in each. Ottawa will host Game 4 at Canadien Tire Centre, scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.
