Youngstown Press Club observes World Press Freedom Day
AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Saturday is World Press Freedom Day. Members of the Youngstown Press Club observed the day in Austintown Park, where 15 people read the names of the 103 journalists who were killed last year practicing their profession. It's the most journalists killed in a year since the Committee to Protect Journalists began tracking those numbers in 1992. 'We're remembering those who have pursued ethical journalism and then were slain because of that,' said co-chair Jonathan Cambouris. 'When someone is committed to truth and they're exploring truth and they're looking for ethical truth, now there's reason to believe that this is, there's something disturbing about this.' The event had representation from all parts of the world, including Gaza. The Youngstown Press Club has been recognizing World Press Freedom Day for the past five years. Read next: Residents express frustration over dam removal The board of commissioners is the third and final entity to approve the 10-year, 60% tax abatement that has already been approved by Howland and Warren townships for the facility. Plans for the paper manufacturing plant off of Pine Avenue in Trumbull County are moving along, and an announcement could come as soon as May, according to Howland Township Trustee James LaPolla. The property spans Howland and Warren townships, with the city of Warren providing utilities. On Dec. 28, 2023, the Western Reserve Port Authority announced the sale of 560 acres of the former steel mill property to the Kimberly-Clark Company, which is known for products such as Cottonelle, Depends, Huggies, Kleenex and Scott paper towels. The land bought by Kimberly-Clark was used for 100 years to make steel. The mill closed in 2012. It was demolished, and the land was later bought and cleaned up by the port authority. Last week, the Ohio Controlling Board approved $17 million to build an access road for the property. Nick Rich, Nadine Grimley, Stan Boney and Gerry Ricciutti contributed to this report.
