Saints To Bring In Veteran Running Back For Minicamp Tryout
Saints To Bring In Veteran Running Back For Minicamp Tryout originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New Orleans Saints are bringing in a big name at running back for a tryout at this week's minicamp. As first reported by Nick Underhill of veteran running back Cam Akers will be trying out for a spot with New Orleans during minicamp practices this week. Advertisement This news shouldn't be a shock. New Orleans reportedly showed interest in former Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb before the Houston Texans signed him this week. A 2nd Team All-ACC selection with the Florida State Seminoles, Akers was a second round choice by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2020 NFL Draft. Splitting backfield snaps with Darrell Henderson as a rookie, Akers still led the Rams with 625 rushing yards as a rookie despite missing four games. He'd account for 248 yards from scrimmage through the playoffs on the way to the Rams Super Bowl LVI championship. Advertisement Akers rebounded to lead the Rams with 786 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns in 2022. Early in the 2023 campaign, Los Angeles would trade Akers to the Minnesota Vikings. In six games with Minnesota, Akers managed just 138 yards on the ground before being placed on injured reserve. Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers (3) runs the ball against the Seattle Seahawks. Akers was dealt back to Minnesota, where he ran for 297 yards over the final 12 games. Over his five-year NFL career, Akers has rushed for 2,025 yards while averaging 4 yards per carry and running for 13 touchdowns. He's added 52 receptions for 388 yards and 4 more scores. However, he's been slowed by injuries and was never able to secure a featured backfield role despite several chances. Kendre Miller hasn't stayed on the field in his two years and 2024 veteran addition Clyde Edwards-Helaire didn't show consistency. New Orleans brought in rookie backs Devin Neal and Marcus Yarns, but Neal was a sixth-round pick and Yarns was not drafted. Cam Akers will not be asked to be a featured back if signed by the Saints. Insread, it will be a chance to resurrect his once-promising career as a power complement in the New Orleans backfield. New Orleans Saints to host Denver Broncos in preseason Week 3
NFL schedule leaks and rumormongering continue into midday, and one of the New Orleans Saints' preseason matchups has been revealed. While several regular season games have been informally announced, the preseason is the topic of focus in this report, specifically the last one. As was shared by Nick Underhill for the Saints will be taking on their former head coach Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos in preseason Week 3 at home. This matchup was an ugly one as it most recently happened in Oct. 2024, when the Saints lost 33-10 on Thursday Night Football in front of a national audience. Even worse, their only touchdown of the night was scored in garbage time, as the game was out of hand pretty much during the entirety of the showdown. Advertisement While the preseason doesn't count for much in terms of value for the teams record-wise, it should be a good opportunity for the Saints to clear up their roster and make some final decisions ahead of their Week 1 bout with the Arizona Cardinals at home, which means they also won't have to travel between that span either. Arizona Cardinals to open 2025 season on the road vs. New Orleans Saints
Arizona Cardinals to open 2025 season on the road vs. New Orleans Saints The Cardinals' 2025 season opener might be the best possible way to start the year. The Arizona Cardinals have not released their 2025 regular-season schedule yet, but we are beginning to get information about it. According to Nick Underhill, who covers the New Orleans Saints, the Cardinals will face the Saints on the road in Week 1. This will be the fifth time in the last six years the Cardinals open on the road. This is perhaps the best-case scenario for the Cardinals to start the season with a potential win. The Saints are in a bit of disarray at quarterback. Derek Carr suffered a shoulder injury that would have cost him the entire 2025 season and decided to retire from the NFL. They have a rookie head coach in Kellen Moore. They could have a rookie starting quarterback. The Saints drafted Tyler Shough in the second round this year and will compete with Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener for the starting job. Rattler went 0-6 as a starter as a rookie. The Saints are not projected to very good in 2025. The Cardinals and the rest of the NFL will release their full regular-season schedules today at 5 p.m. Arizona time. Saints visit with versatile LSU offensive lineman
Saints visit with versatile LSU offensive lineman Nick Underhill reported the New Orleans Saints visited with LSU right tackle Emery Jones while hosting 2025 draft prospects from around the area at their local pro day. The team has now met with both LSU offensive tackles, Jones and Will Campbell. One similarity Jones and Campbell has is questions about if they'll move to guard in the NFL. Where Jones differentiates himself, is he showed himself playing guard at the Senior Bowl and impressed some people. ESPN draft analyst, Matt Miller, noticed how comfortable Jones was on the interior. The proof of concept of Jones at guard is there, and where he'd be drafted is good value for the Saints. Dillon Radunz is slotted to be the starting left guard in Kellen Moore's inaugural season, but he's only on a one-year contract. Jones would be a Day 2 selection, who could come in and compete for that job as a rookie. Even if he doesn't start, there's a good chance New Orleans would be drafting him to start the next season. Jones' history as a right tackle and projection as a guard would, at the worst, give the Saints a backup who can step up at four different positions.
