Switch 2 screen film layer must not be removed warns Nintendo
Nintendo has warned Switch 2 owners not to remove a protective layer for the screen, as other health and safety information is discovered. The Nintendo Switch 2 launches this week and while most people will be clamouring to boot up Mario Kart World on Thursday, June 5, there are always some important steps to bear in mind when getting a new console. Those who have an original Switch will likely need to transfer save data over to the new system, while those of a clumsy (or sensible) persuasion might have invested in a screen protector to help avoid any long-term scratches or marks. However, some panic has emerged following the circulation of the Nintendo Switch 2's health and safety manual, which refers to a protective film layer already on the screen. As noted in the manual under the 'Careful Usage' section, the console's 7.9 inch LCD screen is covered with a 'film layer' designed to make it shatter-proof. 'The screen is covered with a film layer designed to prevent fragments scattering in the event of damage,' the guidelines read. 'Do not peel it off.' If you're worried about this film layer, this isn't a new thing. This same warning was in the manual for the Nintendo Switch OLED, which had the same protective layer to stop screen fragments from spreading if it is damaged. As such, it's not easily removed. Perhaps more importantly, this layer doesn't cancel out the job of a screen protector, which are mostly used to prevent dirt or damage from affecting the screen. More Trending Nintendo provides other safety tips for the Switch 2 in the manual, including advising you not to use the console in 'dusty or smoky areas' and 'not to cover the air intakes or vents on the console or the dock to avoid overheating'. Elsewhere, Nintendo encourages players to 'charge the built-in batteries at least once every six months' as if they're not used for a long period of time, 'it may become impossible to charge them'. Again, this same advice is in the original Switch manual. If you're on the hunt for a screen protector, Nintendo is selling them with a Switch 2 case for £20.99. Nintendo Switch OLED models plummet in price as Switch 2 looms
Ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2 release, retailers including Amazon, Argos and Very have dropped the price of the Switch OLED models, with shoppers able to pick up a console from £49 with one enticing deal The Nintendo Switch 2 is due to hit the shelves soon, but we've spotted price drops on the previous model that may tempt shoppers away from the new release. Nintendo's latest console is set for a June 5 launch, but since pre-orders opened in April, stock has been hard to come by. Many retailers sold out almost instantly, with countless gamers still waiting to secure their console. The Switch 2 comes with a £395.99 price tag, but ahead of its launch date, several retailers reduced the price of the previous model. Shoppers opting for the Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED can save more than £150 compared to the Switch 2, with Very slashing up to £210 off the listed price with trade-ins of other consoles – and they don't have to be Nintendo. The biggest discounts are available when handing over devices including the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, but there are still smaller savings up for grabs with other consoles like the Meta Quest 3, PlayStation 4, or even an old Gameboy. Very is currently offering the Nintendo Switch for £259, which can be reduced to £49 when trading in a PS5 – depending on its storage and condition. The same trade-in offer is available with the Nintendo Switch OLED, which usually comes in at £299 before any discounts. But for those without a console to trade in, Amazon has dropped the Nintendo Switch OLED from £250.76 to £237 for the white model. This may not seem like a huge discount, but it's the cheapest price ever offered by the retail giant, according to price tracker camelcamelcamel. The blue and red OLED console is only slightly more expensive, now reduced from £251 to £241. This beats Argos ' new 'special offer price' of £299.99 for both the OLED white and blue and red models. The Nintendo Switch OLED has racked up an impressive 4.6-star rating from Amazon customers, with more than 2,800 buyers awarding it a perfect five stars. One satisfied shopper said: 'This new updated Switch OLED really is worth the upgrade. 'It has 64GB of memory, twice what the original Switch has and the console is faster at updates and loading games. With its OLED screen, it is much clearer to play games on the move and has better battery life too. Overall, it is worth every penny.' Another said: 'Not my first Nintendo Switch but my first OLED version and the difference really is night and day. The screen is a million times better than the standard Switch and Switch Lite, the games and colours pop so much more and are really vibrant. "As you come to expect with Nintendo there is a brilliant selection of games for all ages. Top tip if buying the white model, invest in a protective shell case for the actual console and joy cons.' One buyer noted a potential flaw, saying: 'I've noticed the OLED generates more heat faster than the original model. I tried dimming the brightness and lowering the volume, but the fan whirred like crazy after two hours. I advise taking breaks here and there from the Switch if in handheld mode.' But a third happy customer said: 'The Switch OLED is a fantastic iteration that elevates the gaming experience to new heights. The enhanced picture quality on the vibrant screen is an absolute delight, making every game pop with vividness and clarity that truly mesmerises. "One standout feature is the improved battery life, allowing for extended gaming sessions without interruption.'

Nintendo's ditching OLED support for Switch 2 screens in favor of a return to LCD, and I'm not sure I'm 100% convinced by its explanation

The Nintendo Switch 2 is returning to an LCD screen in place of its recent OLED alternative, because the technology has moved on enough that it makes more sense. In an roundtable Q+A after yesterday's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, some of the new console's main architects were asked why they'd made the decision to opt for an LCD screen. While the original Switch shipped with one of those, Nintendo made a substantial show halfway through the generation, offering an upgrade path to the Nintendo Switch OLED - the main selling point of which was its improved screen. According to Tetsuya Sasaki, general manager of Nintendo's Technology Development Division, the decision to avoid an OLED screen came about because of leaps in LCD technology. "During development," he explained via a translator, "there was a lot of advances in LCD technology. During our development, we took a look at the LCD technology that was available to us now, and after a lot of consideration, we decided to stick with LCD." You might think this is nothing more than Nintendo preparing itself for an inevitable Switch 2 OLED, but senior director Kouichi Kawamoto explained that there's a genuine new offering on those LCD screens - HDR. Kawamoto points out that "even with the OLED version of Nintendo Switch, we hadn't had compatibility with HDR," but the LCD screens Nintendo is using now offer support for that. HDR, or 'High dynamic range', offers a greater visual range between the lightest and darkest tones on a screen, creating better vibrancy, even with a screen material that isn't necessarily top of the range. Nevertheless, I'd keep an eye out for that eventual Switch 2 OLED release. The Switch 2 boasts a 1080p 120Hz display that has me more hyped for the handheld than ever.
