Nintendo Switch 2 already in shops ahead of incoming launch

Proof of retailers receiving Nintendo Switch 2 stock has emerged online and it wouldn't be surprising if the console leaked ahead of release. Since the proper unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 last month, Nintendo has gone all in on marketing the new console through hands-on events, developer interviews, and advertisements on its Nintendo Today! app. That's not enough for the most avid fans though, who are hungry for more glimpses of the new hardware, as its launch date inches ever nearer. We're talking about the kind of fans who started queuing up to buy one in early April. Now, fans have leapt onto a photo of a shipment of consoles that recently arrived at US retailer Target, further reinforcing how close the Switch 2 is to be released. The photo was taken by someone claiming to be a Target employee, who shared it on Reddit. Although it only shows featureless cardboard boxes in a cage, they said the store had received 40 units; a 50:50 split between the Switch 2 on its own and the Mario Kart World bundle. They shared a second photo to prove the boxes did contain Switch 2s, but both pics have since been deleted, along with the poster's Reddit account. Probably because snapping pics of stock before it's gone on the shelves would have, or already has, landed them in trouble. Unsurprisingly, at least one of the photos can still be found on X, with YouTuber Jake Randall sharing their own photo of Switch 2 stock he spotted at a Target store. Surprisingly, some of the Switch 2 boxes weren't sealed in a separate cardboard box to hide what they are and while the stock was secured in a cage, the cage was left on the shop floor, which is why Randall was able to grab a picture. Target stores are receiving their Switch 2 stock and apparently as long as it's locked in a cage they don't mind leaving it in the middle of the floor! 🤣 — Jake Randall (@Jake_Randall_YT) May 26, 2025 We've already seen a few people crack jokes about stealing one, but you know someone has genuinely considered it. However, they're unlikely to work well out of the box, as the console is expected to have a large day one patch, just like the Wii U did, and it probably won't work online at all at launch. Nevertheless, knowing what people are like, it wouldn't be shocking if the Switch 2 broke its street date and people began sharing pictures and videos of it earlier than they should. That would be in keeping with how the Switch 2 has been handled. While rumours of a Switch successor had made rounds for years, genuine leaks ratcheted up towards the end of 2024. By the time Nintendo formally showed the console off in January, its design was already widely known, with accessory company Genki showing off a 3D replica of the Switch 2 beforehand. More Trending That's, unsurprisingly, come back to bite Genki since Nintendo has filed a lawsuit against the company, accusing it of trademark infringement, unfair competition, and false advertising. Even without the photos, though, it was safe to assume retailers would be receiving Switch 2 stock this week, since the console launches next Thursday on June 5. Stock is almost certainly already in the UK but Nintendo tried to get as much into the US as possible early on, so it would arrive before Trump started imposing tariffs. So far, though, the signs are that most countries will have plenty of stock, although pre-orders did sell out in Japan, with Nintendo issuing an apology for failing to meet demand. Nintendo Switch 2 Quietly Introduces New Security Feature for the Console—Do You Need It?

It is already less than a month before the Switch 2 arrives to users who pre-ordered it or for those who are buying it on day one, but Nintendo is not stopping in sharing new features to enjoy on the console. The latest feature introduced by Nintendo was unveiled quietly, and it centers on a security feature for the Switch 2 that was not seen in the original console since its release in 2017. There have already been many helpful features that Nintendo introduced in previous showcases of the Switch 2, from the many software-level improvements down to the upgrades of its Joy-Con controllers. Nintendo Quietly Introduces New Switch 2 Feature According to Nintendo's announcement on the Nintendo Today! app (via ComicBook Gaming), the Japanese gaming company added a new layer of security for the Switch 2 console. It is important to note that the original Switch did not have any kind of security feature available before, only a child lock-esque feature that requires users to tap or press on a button thrice to access the console. However, this new security feature takes privacy and safety up a notch as it will now allow users to setup a Security Lock after their console is locked to avoid it being accessed by anyone else. This new Security Lock option would allow users to set a custom PIN that would be required whenever accessing the console so they can access the home, games, menu, settings, and more. While this feature is no longer new to smart devices as it has been standard among smartphones, tablets, computers, and more, this is the first time that it came to the Nintendo Switch console. Do You Need This New Switch 2 Security Feature? This new Switch 2 security feature is not exactly a deal-breaker as it is not a big enough reason to convince gamers to buy the new console from Nintendo, but it is certainly an addition to the experience. Not only would users get a chance to secure their files, information, payment methods, games, and their saved files in the console, but also make it hard for thieves to access such information. That being said, there are no announcements from Nintendo if they are pairing this new Security Lock feature with a "Find My"-like feature to help users locate their console if it goes missing, but that would also be a welcome addition. For users who do not want others like relatives, friends, or children to mess with their games, progress, and saved files, this Security Lock feature would be beneficial in preventing others from accessing their Switch 2 consoles. Nintendo Switch 2 just stole a trick from the iPhone — to help preserve battery health

The Nintendo Switch 2 will include an optional mode to preserve battery health by only charging the device to 90% while it's docked or plugged into a charging cable. According to a post on the Nintendo Today! news app (via Engadget), the console will then maintain its charge at 90% until it returns to battery power. It's a feature we saw Apple debut back on the iPhone 15 in 2023 as a way of keeping the device's lithium-ion battery healthier for longer. This capped charging approach offsets the battery degradation that occurs when devices are kept in a fully-charged state. This capped charging approach offsets the battery degradation that occurs when devices are kept in a fully-charged state. On the iPhone (and Apple Watch), users can charge to 80% and then decide to add the additional 20% if they want to by tapping the screen. Nintendo appears to be taking a different approach by letting gamers put the Switch 2 into a dedicated capped charging mode via the system settings. A toggle that reads "Stop Charging Around 90%" can be switched on or off depending on whether you want to sacrifice 10% of gameplay time for a healthier battery long-term. If you've landed a Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order and are lucky enough to be getting one at launch, keeping the battery in good condition should be a top priority. Although the Switch 2 is an upgrade over its predecessor in many ways, the battery life could actually be worse. Nintendo has noted that battery life for the console will run between 2 and 6.5 hours on a full charge. The company notes, 'battery life will depend on the games you play and usage conditions.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The original Nintendo Switch could manage between 4.5 to 9 hours in either the base or Switch OLED configurations. Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch Lite runs for 3 to 7 hours per Nintendo's estimates. That upgrade to a bigger screen and more processing power for the Switch 2 has come at a cost to its longevity away from the mains. Given that fact, owners will want to do everything they can to make sure the device's battery lasts as long as possible.
