Kerala: No fresh cases, Nipah Virus under control in Malappuram

Malappuram, May 16 (UNI) No fresh case of Nipah Virus was reported in Kerala's Malappuram district on Friday, with officials saying the situation was under control. So far,166 people have been identified as contacts of Nipah Virus patients and are under observation. A Health Department press release said here that all 67 samples tested during the day have returned negative results. Meanwhile, the confirmed Nipah-infected woman patient remains in the ICU at the EMS Cooperative Hospital, Perinthalmanna. One patient each is undergoing treatment in isolation wards at the Government Medical College hospital, Manjeri and the Medical College hospital at Ernakulam. Among the identified contacts, 65 people have been classified as high risk and 101 as low risk. Prophylactic treatment is being administered to 11 people. Home visits as part of the Health Department fever survey have been completed. Of the 15 tele calls received by the Nipah call centre, psychological support was provided to seven people. UNI AK SSP

Health Minister Veena George has issued a stern warning, directing those who have come in contact with the Nipah-infected woman from Valanchery to strictly adhere to a 21-day quarantine in spite of testing negative for the virus. Ms. George cautioned people against complacency and warned that the situation should not be taken lightly even in the absence of new cases. She pointed out Nipah's high-priority status globally and the strict national and State protocols in place to combat the viral infection. Meanwhile, the condition of the 42-year-old woman infected with Nipah continued to be critical on Wednesday. She has been in coma in the intensive care unit of EMS Memorial Cooperative Hospital, Perinthalmanna. Health officials completed their fever survey by covering 4,749 houses within 3-km radius of the Nipah patient's house at Valanchery. As many as 166 people were in quarantine as they had come in contact with the patient after she developed symptoms on April 25. While 65 of them were in high risk, 101 were in low risk. The Minister asked them to remain in quarantine for 21 days even if they tested negative for Nipah. They were advised to avoid travel and interactions with others. Those violating the quarantine guidelines would be penalised, said an official statement here.

Nipah: domestic animal survey held in Valanchery

The Animal Husbandry department conducted a survey and collected animal samples from houses near a Nipah patient's residence in Valanchery municipality as part of investigation and preventive measures on Monday (May 12). Animal samples were collected from a 500-metre radius around the residence of the 42-year-old woman infected with Nipah. However, the woman's condition remained critical on Monday. She has been in a coma since May 1, the day she collapsed at the EMS Memorial Cooperative Hospital at Perinthalmanna. Health Minister Veena George said on Monday that two more persons on the contact list of the Nipah infected woman had tested negative. So far, 49 people tested so far were negative. As many as 40 more persons were included on the Nipah contact list on Monday, raising the total number of persons on the list to 152. Of them, 62 are in a high-risk category, and 90 are in low-risk group. As many as 108 of those on the contact list are from Malappuram district, 36 from Palakkad, three from Kozhikode, and one each from Ernakulam, Idukki, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Alappuzha districts. Eight persons on the contact list of the Nipah-infected woman were hospitalised, with two in intensive care, despite none others testing positive for the deadly Nipah virus so far. Health officials said 13 persons in the high-risk category received prophylactic treatment as a precautionary measure against Nipah. Health officials on Monday visited 881 houses in nine wards within a three-kilometre radius of the Nipah patient's house as part of an ongoing fever surveillance. So far, 4,749 houses have been covered.
