Job racket busted in Lucknow; 9 held for running fake call centres
LUCKNOW The Lucknow Police on Tuesday busted a job racket with the arrest of nine people, including four women, for allegedly running fake call centres that defrauded job seekers by posing as recruiters. They promised jobs in top companies, mostly airlines, IT and automobile companies, to extort money and vanished after issuing forged appointment letters. 'The joint operation by the southern surveillance cell, Cyber Crime Cell, and police teams from Banthra and Sarojini Nagar police stations led to back-to-back raids at two locations, one in Azad Bihar Colony and another near the Outer Ring Road underpass. A large cache of laptops, mobile phones, forged documents and digital evidence was seized,' said DCP (south) Nipun Agarwal. 'The gang was operating well-structured call centres that targeted unemployed youth across several states. They would impersonate HR personnel of reputed companies, conduct fake interviews over calls, and send forged appointment letters in exchange for money,' said Agarwal. 'Over a hundred people are estimated to have been duped. Investigations are underway to identify all victims and trace the financial links,' he added. Explaining the gang's modus operandi, the DCP said it involved luring victims through phone calls, WhatsApp messages, and emails with promises of lucrative jobs. Once a candidate was hooked, they were asked to transfer money on the pretext of processing fees or training charges. The victims would then receive fake offer letters featuring logos and signatures of well-known firms, after which all contact would be severed. 'The suspects arrested from Azad Bihar Colony were identified as Ajay Pratap Singh, Amit Singh, Santosh Kumar, Brushali Singh and Aarti Singh. Four others - Kuldeep Singh, Priyanka Kashyap, Shalu Vishwakarma and Anchal Sharma - were caught operating out of a commercial unit in Sarojini Nagar under the name Sky Net Enterprises,' the police stated in a release. The police said two more suspects, Sandeep Singh and Santosh, were absconding and efforts were on to trace them. 'FIRs have been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, and forensic analysis of the seized gadgets is in progress,' said police. The DCP said the callers at the centre were hired on a salary of ₹8000 to 10000 a month. Fraudsters used to procure candidates' data from a Noida-based portal for ₹15,000 a month and made calls after shortlisting 100 CVs daily. Callers used to take money in the name of job and police verification. After this, they used to send fake call letters. 'The gang created an illusion of legitimacy as they even had scripts, call lists, and templates ready. The victims genuinely believed they had landed jobs at major firms,' a senior officer from the surveillance cell said.

Cattle smuggling gang busted after gunfight in Lucknow; 5 held
A suspected cattle smuggler was injured in police firing late Friday night in Lucknow's Gosaiganj area after he allegedly opened fire at a police team. The operation led to the arrest of five members of an inter-state smuggling gang active across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, police said on Saturday. Deputy commissioner of police (South) Nipun Agarwal said the accused, Shoaib alias Ganda, was shot in the leg during retaliatory firing by the police and has been admitted to a hospital. Shoaib has a criminal history including murder and cattle smuggling. He, along with Jabir, Faizan, Munir, and Firasat, was wanted in several cases across multiple districts. The arrests followed weeks of technical surveillance after police intercepted a 12-tyre truck transporting 20 cattle on the Purvanchal Expressway on May 5. The truck had mismatched number plates, and broke down during the chase. The smugglers abandoned the truck and fled in a four-wheeler, police said in a press statement. An FIR was registered at Gosaiganj police station under the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, Animal Cruelty Act, and Section 318(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Surveillance teams began tracing the suspects using CCTV footage and electronic tracking. Police recovered a country-made pistol (.315 bore) with one live and two spent cartridges, nine mobile phones, and a car bearing registration number DL-1CAG-3934 used in the escape. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that they sourced cattle from districts such as Meerut, Rampur, Hardoi, and Muzaffarnagar. The animals were then transported to Sasaram in Bihar for illegal slaughter. To avoid detection, the gang used four-wheelers to scout safe routes and bypass police checkpoints.

2 kids among 5 killed as Bihar-Delhi sleeper bus catches fire in Lucknow
At least five people, including two women and two children, died after a Delhi-bound private sleeper bus from Bihar's Begusarai caught fire in the early hours of Thursday on the outskirts of Lucknow. The incident occurred around 5 am on the outer ring road near Kisan Path in the Mohanlalganj area. 'There were 80 passengers in the bus, all from Bihar. When the fire broke out, the driver and conductor fled, leaving passengers trapped inside. Locals, along with fire and police teams, rescued the others by breaking the bus windows,' said deputy commissioner of police (South) Nipun Agarwal, who reached the site with senior officers. The victims have been identified as Lakkhi Devi, 55, and her daughter Soni, 26, both residents of Samastipur Madhepur Hasanpur, Bihar; Devraj, 4 and Sakshi, 2, children of Ram Balak Mahato from Sitamarhi Gambhar, Bihar; and Madhusudan, a resident of Begusarai Rural, Bihar. Eyewitnesses said most passengers were asleep when the fire started. Panic erupted as the smoke filled the bus. 'The driver Shankar Yadav and conductor Neeraj Kumar, both said to be from Bihar escaped by breaking a window, leaving passengers behind,' said assistant commissioner of police, Mohanlaganj Rajneesh Verma. An extra seat installed near the driver's cabin reportedly blocked the main exit, making it difficult for people to escape. 'Many passengers tried to flee but fell over each other. Those who couldn't make it out died in the fire,' said a survivor. According to chief fire officer (CFO) Mangesh Kumar, the fire engulfed the bus within ten minutes. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes, but the vehicle had already been reduced to ashes by then. 'Preliminary findings suggest the fire was caused by a short-circuit. Also, the bus's emergency exit failed to open, adding to the casualty count,' said DCP Agarwal. Police have registered a first information report (FIR) and initiated legal proceedings against those responsible. The role of the driver, conductor, and private bus operator is under investigation. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the loss of lives in the incident. 'The chief minister has instructed the district administration officials to reach the spot and expedite the relief work, and immediately take the injured to the hospital for proper treatment. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured,' the chief minister's office said in a post on X.
