VMC team reach Nagercoil, learn about innovative sanitation, summer relief measures
Corporators and staff from the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), are on a two-week study tour to various cities in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
On Monday, the team visited the Nagercoil Municipal Corporation in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Commissioner Nishant Krishna welcomed the VMC members, while Mayor Thiru. Mahesh shared insights into the the administration of the corporation, which comprises of 54 divisions grouped into four zones. Additionally, he discussed council management systems and officials' work methodologies.
The Mayor explained that sanitation management is handled through six Material Recovery Facility (MRF) plants. Here waste is segregated, and outsourced to specialised agencies. He said: 'The performance of these agencies is being monitored through a Key Performance Index.'
To protect against the heat during summer, the government distributes kits to the people, which include ORS sachets, caps, cooling glasses, and other items.
During field-level inspection, the VMC team visited the Knowledge Centre in the city, which offers a free library facility for students.
TDP corporator Vummadi Venkateswara Rao appreciated the development initiatives undertaken by the Nagercoil Municipal Corporation and extended an invitation to them to study the development activities undertaken in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.
