Deputies: 96-year-old man dies in crash near Mattawan
ANTWERP TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A crash at an intersection near Mattawan Tuesday afternoon left one man dead and two people injured, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.
It happened around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 657 and 58th Avenue in Antwerp Township. Deputies say the 96-year-old driver of a Ford F150 pickup truck was headed east on 58th Avenue when he ran through a stop sign at the intersection with County Road 657. The truck was broadsided by a a Chevrolet Silverado that was headed north.
The impact sent the F150 crashing into a Nissan NV200 work van that was stopped at the stop sign on westbound 58th Avenue, the sheriff's office said.
The driver of the F150 was partially ejected through the back window of the truck cab. He was not wearing a seat belt. The man died at the scene, deputies say.
It's not clear if he may have suffered a medical incident while driving, the sheriff's office said.
The two people in the Silverado were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver of the Nissan was not injured, deputies say.
