Calls to strictly regulate nitrous oxide as report shows how easy it is to buy online

More info Calls to strictly regulate nitrous oxide have been made after it was revealed that it is readily available to minors online in Ireland. Dublin TD Mark Ward is calling for the "laughing gas" to be strictly regulated in Ireland due to the online sale of it alongside balloons on sites such as Amazon and Adverts. There are even recommendations on the sites that they are frequently bought together. A report by The Journal showed that there have been several deaths in Europe - including Ireland - due to misuse of nitrous oxide. As previously reported by Dublin Live, a 16-year-old boy lost the feeling in his limbs and became unable to walk after using the drug for four years. Sinn Fein TD Ward said: 'What is most shocking is that on the Amazon website, it recommended the purchase of balloons as 'frequently bought together' with nitrous oxide canisters. I have been raising the need to regulate the sale of nitrous oxide for a long time and I have produced legislation that would do just that. 'Nitrous oxide does have medical and catering uses which is why my bill would restrict its sale just to those industries that have legitimate use of the product. This would help prevent the misuse of the substance, particularly by minors. We have seen nitrous oxide being targeted to young people with its advertising and flavours. 'We know that there are health effects, both physical and mental, that can be caused by the misuse of the nitrous oxide. We have heard of people presenting with frostbite and neurological damage to medical professionals, following the use of nitrous oxide. The Journal have also attributed several deaths in Europe, including Ireland to the misuse of Nitrous Oxide. 'This requires action and the fact that is so readily available online should highlight the urgency to regulate its sale. I am calling on the government to take action on this. If they won't my bill is ready to go to regulate the sale of nitrous oxide.' Join our Dublin Live breaking news service on WhatsApp. Click this link to receive your daily dose of Dublin Live content. Sagah: Tropi named Malaysia's sole partner in global peatland research project

Sagah addresses members of the august House during the DUN sitting today. – Sarawak Public Communications Unit photo KUCHING (May 26): The Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (Tropi) has been appointed as Malaysia's sole partner for the Nitrous Oxide (N2O) Budgets in Peatlands: From Processes to Global Comprehension project this year, said Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn. The Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister stated that as part of this collaboration, a Miro Multi-compound Gas Analyser System was deployed at a field site in February to continuously monitor greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes — specifically Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and Methane (CH4). 'To address data transmission challenges from the remote location, the Miro system has been integrated with Starlink satellite internet, enabling real-time, digitised data transfer to Tropi's central repository. 'This setup allows Tropi researchers to continuously access, monitor, and analyse GHG flux data, significantly enhancing the efficiency and responsiveness of their monitoring efforts,' said Sagah during his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting here today. Sagah said Tropi continues to make substantial contributions to global scientific discourse on peatland conservation and sustainable development in 2025. The institution represented Sarawak at major international platforms, including the International Soil Science Conference 2025, the European Geosciences Union General Assembly (EGU2025), the International Peatland Society Annual Convention 2025, and the 12th Intecol Wetlands Conference. In the speech, Roland highlighted the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre's (SBC) efforts to commercialise biodiversity-based products through a structured and scientific approach. 'This approach involves a progression of registering end products that have traditional claims, to scientifically validated modern health claims and subsequently as pharmaceutical applications,' he said. As a start, SBC is targeting four monographs of local species. 'Monographs are detailed scientific documents that describe the species characteristics, their traditional uses, preparation methods, phytochemical information, pharmacological as well as safety and toxicity of the species. These are important references for registering a product.' He said SBC aims to register these species as natural products with traditional claims with the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) by November 2025. 'If successfully commercialised, these will result in benefit sharing with the communities.' 'Speaking of communities, on May 22 to 24 this year, 46 members from 15 indigenous communities, from 40 locations throughout Sarawak convened at SBC for the annual Traditional Knowledge Documentation Workshop. 'The spotlight of this annual workshop is on prioritising their respective plants and associated traditional knowledge for commercialisation,' he added. Sagah said these initiatives reflect his ministry's commitment to both scientific advancement and sustainable economic development, in line with the international theme for Biodiversity Day 2025, 'Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.' 'By recognising the value of traditional knowledge and our biological resources, we are not only committed to sustainable economic growth, but also the preservation of our biodiversity,' he said.

Volvo Group truck sales fall amid tariff uncertainty

Volvo Group, the first major truck manufacturer to report earnings since President Donald Trump announced his global reciprocal duties earlier this month, reported that overall truck sales fell 10% year over year in Q1 as tariff uncertainty grew. Retail truck sales dropped 13% in North America alone, mostly due to weakness in Volvo's long-haul segment, according to the company's Q1 earnings report. Because of a lack of clarity about the impact of tariffs, U.S. truck buyers have taken "a wait and see approach" to purchasing new vehicles, per the report. Volvo has now lowered its 2025 North America sales forecast for heavy-duty trucks to 275,000, a drop of 25,000 from its initial projections. In 2024, Volvo's North American sales reached 308,141, the company reported. Before new levies from the Trump administration this month, Volvo had expected U.S. truck buyers to purchase more 2025 models to avoid higher costs and technical uncertainties from the forthcoming Environmental Protection Agency regulation that toughens emission standards for heavy-duty engines starting with 2027 models. However, the Trump administration has started retreating on the greenhouse-gas emissions rules set during the Biden administration for light-, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, according to the agency has reopened the greenhouse gas phase 3 standard and started reevaluating the Heavy-Duty Nitrous Oxide (NOx) rule under Trump's watch. The Biden-era EPA had sought to remove the most harmful pollutants from diesel-powered trucks. "There is no longer an expectation of a prebuy in 2025 due to EPA27," Volvo said in its Q1 earnings report. Global vehicle sales, including for trucks, buses and construction equipment, declined 9% for Volvo in Q1, and "as the quarter went by, there was increased uncertainty surrounding tariffs and their effect on global trade," President and CEO Martin Lundstedt said in the report. "In the fast-changing geopolitical landscape, it is too early to assess the full implications from the imposed tariffs," Lundstedt said. Volvo plans to mitigate tariff impacts by adjusting its supply chain, changing production levels and reviewing sales agreements, pricing and other business terms with customers and partners, Lundstedt said. The company will implement the changes in key geographic markets. The truck manufacturer recently responded to tariff-fueled uncertainty and slowing market conditions with preparations for hundreds of layoffs at its Pennsylvania and Maryland operations. Volvo subsidiary Mack Trucks planned to lay off up to 350 people over the next 90 days at its Lehigh Valley Operations facility in Macungie, Pennsylvania, a spokesperson said in an April 18 email to Trucking Dive. Volvo also expects to lay off between 50 and 100 workers at its Hagerstown, Maryland, facility, a spokesperson said. Nevertheless, U.S.-imposed tariffs and retaliatory duties from other countries have shaken the markets in which Volvo does business as well as the company's global and regional supply chains. "The situation is fast-changing and complex to assess, and no predictions can be made on future developments, potential impacts on the Group or whether trade restrictions may impact the Group more severely than main competitors," the report said. The tariffs could also raise costs for Volvo's suppliers, potentially hiking the price of Volvo vehicles and making them less competitive, per the report. OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – In 2007, Kimela Tiderman-Alcorn was waiting for her husband, Michael, and her 12-year-old son, Justin to get home from a baseball game. But, they never made it. 'A drunk driver crossed the median on I-44 and hit them head on and killed both of them instantly,' said Tiderman-Alcorn. 'It was terrible.' The driver, along with the passenger, were also killed. LOCAL NEWS: Mother of pregnant teen allegedly shot and killed by boyfriend speaks out 'I don't think there's an excuse for it. She's one of dozens of families bonded by this unimaginable devastation. They're part of the nonprofit group VOID: Victims of Impaired Drivers. They spent Monday morning sharing their stories with lawmakers, hoping to get stricter DUI laws in Oklahoma. 'We believe that we must do everything in our power to eradicate impaired driving by creating the strongest deterrence possible. We must stop mistaking leniency for compassion,' said Jeff Murrow, the founder of VOID. These are the DUI-related bills on the table this session: HB 1222: Requires a threat assessment seen by a judge prior to bond for 2nd and subsequent DUI charges HB 2369: Extends ABLE licensed bartender rules and standards to include services provided on unlicensed premises HB 1933: Prohibits the sale of Nitrous Oxide for any non-medical (recreational) purposes SB 518: Requires 'medical marijuana' products have a warning label regarding impaired driving, the same as other medications SB 54: Modify aggravated DUI to include manner of use of the vehicle. Strengthen consequences to discourage recidivism LOCAL NEWS: Inmate walks away from Oklahoma City correction center Senator Darrell Weaver, R-Moore, is the author of SB 54. 'We're going to put an aggravated offense. We're going to tie some things to the DUI,' said Weaver. 'I can't bring your child back, or your loved one back, or I can't solve your injury today.
