Violence between local residents and foreign nationals in Addo left three dead and 10 injured. An Eastern Cape municipality and the police have called for calm in Addo after violent revenge attacks between local residents and foreign nationals claimed three lives. A violent altercation allegedly broke out between local residents from the Valencia area in Addo and foreign nationals on Sunday night and on Monday. The alleged revenge attacks claimed the lives of three people and left about 10 injured. Revenge attack claims 3 lives, 10 injured According to the Eastern Cape South African Police Service (Saps), community members took to the streets and reportedly attacked foreign nationals in the area. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said the attack started after an alleged fight resulted in the death of a South African man on Sunday night. Reports indicate that other community members mobilised and then randomly attacked local foreigners. The police said the situation was under control on Monday. More police deployed The acting provincial police commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, has deployed additional members from various specialised units. Nkohli said the members are maintaining a heavy police presence in the area. Police are investigating a murder (four counts) case and an attempted murder case (ten counts). 'Kupiso is appealing for calm and further urged community leaders to assist with the engagement,' Nkohli said. Meanwhile, the Sundays River Valley Municipality urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and let the authorities handle matters of violence and crime. Police are searching for the person who fatally stabbed a 69-year-old woman in her bedroom in Maliwa Location, Manzana Administrative Area (eMaxesibeni), Eastern Cape. Police confirmed the incident took place on Saturday morning, 24 May 2025. Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, stated that officers responded to the scene at approximately 7am. Upon arrival, they found the woman's body in her bedroom with several stab wounds to her upper body. The South African Police Service believe the woman was alone at the time of the attack. Police have not yet determined the motive behind the killing and have launched a manhunt to find the suspect or suspects. 'Police are urging anyone with information that could assist the investigating team to contact a team leader on 082 319 8156, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or report it at the nearest police station,' said Nkohli. Two weeks ago, unknown attackers shot and killed two elderly sisters, aged 75 and 85, in their home in Upper Ncera outside Alice, also in the Eastern Cape. According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa, the women were sleeping when unknown suspects broke into their home in the early hours of a Tuesday and shot them. Both women died on the scene from gunshot wounds to their upper bodies. Acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, has condemned the growing violence against vulnerable people. 'Violence against women, children and elderly people is unacceptable. The South African Police Service is committed to protecting the vulnerable against the rise in gender-based violence,' she said. Kupiso urged police investigators to work urgently to arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.
