Brian Daboll teased Abdul Carter over Lawrence Taylor request during Giants legend's visit

Brian Daboll hasn't forgotten Abdul Carter's dubious request. On Thursday, the New York Giants' official X account shared a lighthearted moment from the team's facility involving Daboll, Carter and legendary linebacker Lawrence Taylor, who was in for a visit. In the video, Daboll playfully teased Carter by asking, 'Abdul, you know this guy?' as Taylor was introduced formally. This jest was a nod to Carter's request to wear Taylor's iconic No. 56 jersey, which the Giants retired in honor of the two-time Super Bowl champion's illustrious career. Carter, whom the Giants selected with the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Penn State, had expressed admiration for Taylor and sought permission to don the digits, following in the Hall-of-Fame linebacker's footsteps. Abdul Carter speaks with the media after rookie minicamp at NY Giants Quest Diagnostics Training Center on May 09, 2025 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Getty Images Taylor, while honored, respectfully declined, emphasizing the importance of Carter forging his own legacy. 'He has to be the player that he is,' Taylor said. 'He can't be another Lawrence Taylor. Well, he may be better than a Lawrence Taylor, who knows? But he has to make his mark. It's up to him.' Despite the denial, the interaction between Carter and Taylor was marked by mutual respect. The two shook hands when Taylor was introduced while making his way to the front of the room to deliver his message. With 12.5 sacks and 23.5 tackles for loss with the Nittany Lions in 2024, Carter is projected to be one of the top defensive rookies during the 2025 NFL season. Taylor, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999, was a 10-time Pro Bowler and three-time Defensive Player of the Year with the Giants during his 13-year tenure with the team.

New York Giants sign Abdul Carter to rookie contract

New York Giants sign Abdul Carter to rookie contract The New York Giants have officially signed first-round pick Abdul Carter to his rookie contract -- a four-year, fully guaranteed $45.3 million deal with a $29.5 million signing bonus. Carter, whom the Giants selected No. 3 overall in the 2025 NFL draft, becomes the fourth member of the team's class to sign. "He's a great kid, and he's an exceptional player. He's got great quickness, bend, he's hard to block. He played off the ball the year before, and he has some instincts in that area, as well, smart. Just had a really good meeting with him, and then he was up here -- fun guy to evaluate," head coach Brian Daboll said after Carter's selection. After attempting to unretire both No. 56 and No. 11, belonging to Lawrence Taylor and Phil Simms, respectively, Carter settled on No. 51, last worn by Azeez Ojulari. In his new number, Carter will attempt to create his own legacy. "Abdul is one of those guys that as a true freshman jumped off the film. If you're just watching anybody against Penn State, he's playing off the ball, he's moving at a different speed than everybody else," general manager Joe Schoen said. Carter joins offensive lineman Marcus Mbow, tight end Thomas Fidone II, and cornerback Korie Black as members of the rookie class who have signed their contracts. Quarterback Jaxson Dart, running back Cam Skattebo, and defensive tackle Darius Alexander remain unsigned.

Shawne Merriman has lofty expectations for Giants rookie Abdul Carter

After being selected third overall by the New York Giants in the 2025 NFL draft, there is a ton of hype surrounding Penn State product Abdul Carter. Carter was one of the players tabbed as a 'can't miss' talent out of the draft and days before, it seemed like the Giants were pretty set on taking him at No. 3. Former NFL pass rusher Shawne Merriman was a guest on "Good Morning Football" earlier this week and shared some high expectations for Carter's rookie season with the Giants: Advertisement "I believe Abdul Carter is going to be the Defensive Rookie of the Year," Merriman said. "Just what he can do on the field right now, you can put him on there and he can learn everything else. A guy that is that explosive, you can put him on the field and he's going to make plays regardless. I just like this kid's mentality." Coincidentally, Merriman wore No. 56 and shaped his game around Giants great Lawrence Taylor. Carter, of course, showed interest in wearing LT's iconic No. 56 before getting shot down by the Hall of Famer. Carter joins an impressive defensive line that includes Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Carter will most certainly have a spotlight on him early and often and although the sacks may not come right away, he will elevate the rest of the defensive line. Advertisement With strong quarterback play in the NFC East, the Giants have high hopes for Carter to be a major disruptor in the opponent's backfield. Giants fans are excited to see their new pass rusher on the field and if he comes anywhere close to Merriman's rookie year prediction, the Giants will be happy to have a player of that caliber after Year 1. Abdul Carter: No. 51 is what was available, will have to grow on me

Giants first-round pick Abdul Carter's extended search for his first NFL number finally ended on Friday. Carter was given No. 51 and put it on for the first practice of the team's rookie minicamp. The edge rusher wore No. 11 at Penn State, but that number has been retired for former Giants quarterback Phil Simms and Carter's bid to have it unretired was rebuffed. That was also the case for the No. 56 that Lawrence Taylor made famous during his time with the NFC East club. On Friday, Carter said at a press conference that the number is 'what we had available' and 'it's gonna have to grow on me a little bit.' He said he has no plans to look for a new one before the start of his rookie season. 'It's pretty much set. I'm just happy to be out here playing football. That's all I'm worried about,' Carter said. Carter's first two choices are already part of Giants lore. If all goes well, No. 51 will have a similar place when Carter's career has come to an end.
