Jimmie Johnson didn't enter the winner's circle after the 2025 Daytona 500, but his performance sure felt like a victory. On Sunday night, Johnson guided the No. 84 team for Legacy Motor Club to a third-place finish in the 2025 Daytona 500. It is the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion's best finish in the NextGen car. It was also a successful night for Legacy Motor Club, placing all three drivers in the top 12 spots. Following the Great American Race, Johnson climbed out of his No. 84 car and discussed his third-place finish. It may not have been a victory, but the Legacy Motor Club majority owner was very pleased with the night. "This feels incredible," Johnson said. "I have emotions that I didn't expect to have. I've never been in this position as an owner, and it's really opened up a different set of emotions. And the pride that I have in this result and the pride that I have in this company, now that we're trying to achieve and the journey we're on, I am so satisfied, so happy right now." There will be plenty of flashy and eye-catching paint schemes on the track at Daytona International Speedway this weekend for the NASCAR Cup Series season opener, the 2025 Daytona 500. But Jimmie Johnson's ride will be hard to miss. The seven-time NASCAR champ — who races part-time for his team, Legacy Motor Club after retiring from full-time racing in 2020 —will pilot the No. 84 Toyota in Sunday's Daytona 500. He's one of nine drivers without a charter entered in the race, and he and Martin Truex Jr. — who retired from full-time racing at the end of the 2024 season — locked themselves into the after qualifying for the 40-car Daytona 500 field Wednesday night. Johnson's paint scheme for the Daytona 500 was designed in part by Shaquille O'Neal and is inspired by his career, particularly his time with the Orlando Magic. Jimmie Johnson's new NASCAR crew chief for the 2025 Daytona 500 has been revealed. According to NASCAR's Roster Portal, Chad Johnston will serve as the crew chief for Johnson and the No. 84 team at the 2025 Daytona 500. In November 2024, Johnston signed with Legacy Motor Club as the new Manager of Race Engineering. The former Stewart-Haas Racing crew chief spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons with Ryan Preece, earning two top-5 finishes and seven top-10 finishes in 72 starts. Johnston earned his first of seven NASCAR Cup Series victories with Martin Truex Jr. in 2013. The best year for Johnston came in 2017, as Kyle Larson won four races. Now, Johnston will serve as Johnson's crew chief in the Great American Race on February 16 at Daytona International Speedway. The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion must make the 2025 Daytona 500 through qualifying or the duels, and Johnston hopes to bring him a fast No. 84 car in one week.
