98 days until Saint's season opener: Every player to wear No. 98
98 days until Saint's season opener: Every player to wear No. 98 Everyone from Payton Turner to Sheldon Rankins and Sedrick Ellis There are 98 days remaining until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 season, and we're continuing to count down the days by looking back on every player to wear that jersey number in Saints franchise history. Defensive end Chris Rumph II claimed No. 98 this spring, which previously belonged to defensive end Payton Turner. He picked it up when another former Saints first-round pick, Sheldon Rankins, left in free agency the same year Turner was drafted. It's been a popular choice for first-round defensive linemen in Saints history; Sedrick Ellis also wore it as the team's top pick back in 2008. With 98 days to go until kickoff, here's a look back at each player to use No. 98 with the Saints (via Pro Football Reference): Chris Rumph II (Present) Payton Turner (2021-2024) Sheldon Rankins (2016-2020) Mike Mohamed (2015) Parys Haralson (2013-2014) Sedrick Ellis (2008-2012) Renaldo Wynn (2007) Willie Whitehead (1999-2006) Ron Warner (1998) Jim Hanna (1994) Milford Hodge (1986) Reggie Lewis (1982-1984)

Giants great Phil Simms won't give Abdul Carter No. 11 after family says no
Giants great Phil Simms won't give Abdul Carter No. 11 after family says no It didn't take long after the New York Giants selected Abdul Carter third overall in the 2025 NFL draft for speculation to begin over what number he would be wearing. Carter claimed shortly after being drafted that he would love to wear the iconic No. 56, which was, of course, worn by Giants legendary Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, who many consider the greatest defensive player of all time. After being shot down for the opportunity to unretire No. 56, many then speculated that Carter might request No. 11, which was retired in honor of former Giants quarterback Phil Simms. In an interview on Friday, Simms seemed to have no problem giving Carter his blessing to take on No. 11. Carter viewed that as an honor. However, just as quickly as the door opened for the possibility of Carter wearing No. 11, it seems to have closed. Simms left the final decision up to his family. Although he was in favor of giving Carter No. 11, they were not. He was out-voted. Breaking: Good news for Giants fans who believe in tradition. Phil Simms' #11 will not be coming out of retirement for first-round pick Abdul Carter, who wore 11 at Penn State. Simms said on a podcast he would be okay with it but he told me tonight he was outvoted by his family.… — Gary Myers (@GaryMyersNY) May 3, 2025 Carter wore no. 11 at Penn State, which is somewhat of a legacy number at "linebacker university" after being worn by LaVar Arrington, NaVorro Bowman, and Micah Parsons. The legacy will continue as it appears the iconic No. 11 will be worn by Arrington's son, LaVar Arrington Jr. Carter could possibly turn his attention to No. 98, which was worn by some talented players including Damon "Snacks" Harrison, Fred Robbins, and, most famously, Jessie Armstead. No. 98 would be an opportunity for Carter to build his own legacy behind a new number, while also paying homage to Lawrence Taylor, who wore No. 98 in college at North Carolina. Last year, with the blessing of the family of Ray Flaherty, the Giants brought No. 1 out of retirement for rookie Malik Nabers to wear. The Giants and Nabers may have started a trend as the Tennessee Titans have decided to unretire their No. 1 for 2025 first overall pick Cam Ward. However, it does not appear the Giants will have to unretire a number this time around for Carter.

No. 96 fits Hurricanes' Roslovic just right as he scores for 2nd straight game since reclaiming it
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jack Roslovic got his No. 96 jersey back, and he's wearing it well. The Carolina Hurricanes center scored in a second straight game since taking back the number, beating Detroit Red Wings goaltender Petr Mrázek to break a 1-1 tie in the second period Friday night. Roslovic scored two nights earlier against Tampa Bay in his first game back in No. 96. Roslovic agreed to give Mikko Rantanen the number when Rantanen came to the Hurricanes in a January trade, and Roslovic got a Rolex watch in exchange for it. But Rantanen was dealt to Dallas at the trade deadline after just 14 games when he couldn't reach agreement with Carolina on a contract extension. Roslovic could hardly wait to wear No. 96 again. In the 14 games he wore No. 98, he had just two goals and two assists. ___ AP NHL: The Associated Press
