Man accused in murder case killed by inmates in saket court lockup due to old rivalry

New Delhi: A youth accused of murder was killed by two others in the lock-up at the Saket Courts on Thursday. Police said the attack on the 24-year-old was fuelled by prior animosity caused by the deceased allegedly assaulting one of the assailants and his brother last year. Police said the incident occurred around 10am inside kharja (cell) No. 5 at the Saket Court lock-up. At the time of the incident, more than 30 inmates were housed in the cell. An argument broke out between the deceased Aman and another prisoner, Jitender, which escalated into violence. Jitender's associate, Jaidev, allegedly joined the assault on Aman. A police officer said, "Aman was hit and kicked with such force that his head struck the wall, leading to critical injuries." The youth was rushed to hospital but he was dead by then. There are also unconfirmed claims that after Aman collapsed, the attackers placed their legs on his neck and attempted to strangle him. Police said these allegations were being investigated. When the skirmish began, a policeman posted outside the cell tried to intervene but had to open a door that had two locks and in the time it took him to do this, Aman had already sustained critical injuries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Killer New Dodge Ram 1500 Is Utter Perfection (Take A Look) SocialGazette Undo "The entire incident unfolded in less than a minute," a police source said. "We also learned that the two men had a verbal spat earlier in the morning when being brought to court from Tihar Jail." A police source said the court lock-up is divided into several rooms on two floors, each room capable of holding 30-40 inmates. Inmates known to be enemies are usually not kept together. The cells are only opened in adequate police presence to prevent the cops being overpowered. Police said the attack appears to be a continuation of a feud dating back to 2024, when Aman allegedly stabbed Jitender and his brother during an argument. The hostility has apparently lingered on since. Aman was in jail since 2017 in connection with a murder case registered in Govindpuri. Jitender was arrested for robbery and snatching cases in New Friends Colony, while Jaidev was involved in a robbery case at Ambedkar Nagar. All three were lodged in Jail No 8 in Tihar. "Jitender was brought to Tihar in April this year, while Jaidev was lodged on Dec 13, 2024. Aman was initially held in Jail No. 5, but was transferred to No. 8 in 2020," an officer added. Dhir Singh Kasana, former secretary, Saket Bar Association, remarked, "The incident points at loopholes in the court's security measures. Technologies like video conferencing should be used more. An investigation must be initiated to find reasons behind the incident, including why the two criminals were kept together."

Cameron Hanekom crowned URC young star

Cameron Hanekom has been named the 2024-25 URC Next-Gen Player of the Season following a standout campaign as the Bulls chase a second-consecutive final appearance. The 22-year-old met the criteria for the award, which honours players aged 23 or under with no more than five international caps at the start of the season, and who played at least nine matches. He has featured regularly at No 8, while also offering versatility across the back row, and his performances have pushed him into the Springbok conversation for the upcoming international season. With Jasper Wiese sidelined due to injury, Hanekom is seen as a strong candidate to fill the vacancy in the national setup. Stormers lock Ruben van Heerden added to the South African accolades by claiming the Tackle Machine award, which recognises the competition's most effective defender. Hanekom was one of three Bulls players named in the URC Elite XV. He was joined by Wilco Louw and Jan-Hendrik Wessels. South Africa was further represented in the team of the season by Sharks centre Andre Esterhuizen, Scarlets hooker Marnus van der Merwe, Stormers Flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Leinster bruiser RG Snyman. Extending route 'not a simple task': Governors Bay bus advocates want action

Help us Vicky! That's the plea to Environment Canterbury councillor Vicky Southworth from Governors Bay residents fighting for a bus service. Governors Bay is in Southworth's catchment, but some are questioning her commitment to the area and not pushing enough for a bus route. The community continues to lobby ECan for a long-awaited bus route extension. 'I haven't met her to be quite honest,' said Governors Bay resident and advocate for the extension, John Thacker. 'I just feel that the (ECan) council is not listening. I think she should be coming to the community and saying what's going to happen and what needs to happen,' he said. Governors Bay Community Association chair John Bannock also said he had never met Southworth. 'Haven't heard from her, haven't seen her,' he said. The community has been fighting for a bus route since it was axed after the 2011 earthquake. 'If it had been pushed it would have gone ahead,' Bannock said of what he believes is a lack of interest from ECan. Southworth told Bay Harbour News : 'I haven't been as connected with the community specifically in Governors Bay as I perhaps should have been. I don't think anybody's been directly in contact with me to push it.' She said she stays in communication with Banks Peninsula Ward city councillor Tyrone Fields on the issue. Southworth said she has kept the bus route on the radar of ECan staff, but it was 'sitting in a big pot of things people want to see changed'. 'Public transport is a tough space to get any progress on at the moment, we can't even progress the things we've got support for let alone add new things in,' she said. Fields, Thacker and Otororimo Hotel owner Jeremy Dyer made a submission for the bus extension at the ECan annual draft plan hearings. Fields suggested connecting Governors Bay to the No 1 route which finishes in Cashmere or the No 3 route which finishes in Sumner. Dyer proposed extending the No 8 route which finishes in Rapaki. 'There's maybe 50 people that live in Rapaki, if they come an extra 2km down the road you reach a population of 1000,' he said. 'It's about fairness and equity for a considerable portion of Christchurch ratepayers that have done without public transport for a long time.' Said Fields: 'Whatever route ECan decide to go with, it will be the most spectacular bus ride in the world.' He said ECan was supportive of the extension and hopes it will get 'serious analysis.' But Southworth said adding Governors Bay to the No 8 route is not as simple as it seems. 'To extend any individual trip to Governors Bay would require a full reset of the route 8 timetable. 'Costing this change is not a simple task and would require a full route review to determine the operational impact and overall cost implication,' she said. The ECan public transport team will review public transport access to Governors Bay as part of a network review for greater Christchurch for completion in December next year. Said Southworth: 'We will work with communities to ensure we understand their needs, and explore options, noting Environment Canterbury will never be able to service all areas and every journey. 'We hear and acknowledge the frustration of communities regarding access to public transport and the speed of network improvements, the reality is that we are working in a very constrained environment with limited resources including funding. 'Staff are focused on delivering the Public Transport Futures programme approved through the Long Term Plan 2024/27 and trying to identify any opportunities to make network improvements, however small,' she said. If a bus route extends to Governors Bay it will come at a cost. Ratepayers would pay a public transport rate of $36.72 per $100,000 capital value of their property. If ECan decides to prioritise the bus extension, a public consultation process will need to take place to gauge community support for a public transport rate before it is considered for the next annual plan, said Southworth. 'I really hope that Governors Bay as a community recognise its value, but that's not necessarily the case.' Thacker thinks it is fair the community pays a rate for a bus route. 'We're all a part of Christchurch and we all pay for things we don't fully use,' he said.

Springboks' shock omission: What's happening?

Earlier this week, the Springbok unveiled their latest squad for an alignment camp, bringing in players from far and wide – both locally and abroad – to take part in their latest season preparation. Included in this list was former Junior Springbok Player of the Year, Juarno Augustus, who has finally forced his way onto the national radar after impressing for the Northampton Saints this season. It comes as the Springboks are considering their options at No 8 in the absence of injured Elrigh Louw and Ruan Venter, while Jasper Wiese is another eighthman short of game-time due to a neck injury. Considering these injuries, it was thought that Roos would automatically come into the mix, with the Stormers star having featured in two Tests at eighthman last year. Besides other options such as asking veterans Kwagga Smith or Siya Kolisi to do a job at No 8, there has recently been a serious resurgence in form from Roos after recovering from some injury woes of his own. After bursting onto the scene a couple of years ago with standout performances, there had been some concerns that perhaps Roos was never going to reach his full potential, but he has bounced back with some fine performances for the Stormers this season. It does leave one to wonder why he has not been included in such an extended Springbok squad, and what boxes the national coaches feel the 25-year-old is not ticking. Is it an off-field issue? Something to do with the technicalities of his game? Ill-discipline? Whatever the case may be, the absence of Roos is the one major omission from the latest Springbok squad, and it will certainly be interesting to hear the reasons for this when Rassie Erasmus next speaks to the media.
