Studio Ghibli adds folding fans to its anime specialty store in Japan
Totoro and No Face whisk you away to enchanted worlds. With the humidity beginning to rise in Japan, Studio Ghibli is here to provide some much needed relief with two folding fans dedicated to My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away. The first fan depicts the Totoros from My Neighbour Totoro, in a cooling nighttime forest scene. Totoro and the smaller Medium Totoro can be seen blowing into their ocarinas as they do in the film. On the other end of the fan you'll find the Small Totoros hanging out on a branch, watching the fireworks as many people do during summer in Japan. The attention to detail continues beneath the design, where you'll be greeted by charming Totoro cutouts every time you open the fan. The second design is adorned with camelias and characters from Spirited Away. No Face stares out from the floral setting as a scattering of Soot Sprites scamper about, carrying their beloved star-shaped komeito candy pieces. ▼ Stretching across the fan is Haku, in dragon form… ▼ …and on the bottom, cutout details tip the hat to natural elements like bamboo leaves. With fans being an essential everyday item on summer outings, you'll need a bag to store them in, and there are four varieties to choose from, two of which are new for summer. ▼ The new bags feature No Face, with the kanji 'ゆ' ('Yu') acting as a nod to the bathhouse in the film… ▼ …and Totoro, with a Soot Sprite. Unfortunately, the blue Totoro bag proved to be so popular that it sold out soon after it was released on 31 May. However, two designs have been restocked, including one with an image of Totoro, in a traditional yellow-toned Japanese colour known as 'yamabuki'. The final fan bag is an indigo-hued variety featuring No Face, again with the character 'ゆ', but this time the character is looking over its shoulder, in a pose that recalls the moment a cooling wave of water splashes against him during the train journey scene. The fans retail for 4,070 yen (US$28.33) each and the bags for 1,540 yen each, and they can be purchased at Donguri Kyowakoku stores and online, while stocks last. If flat fans are more your thing, Studio Ghibli has you covered there too. Studio Ghibli releases Mini Mini Stamp sets featuring top anime characters
Totoro and No Face are just some of the familiar faces waiting to leave a mark on your heart. Studio Ghibli characters know how to leave their mark, and now there's a way they can do that literally, thanks to the Mini Mini Stamp collection. Available at the Donguri Kyowakoku Ghibli specialty retail chain, there are four to collect in the series, starting with two dedicated to My Neighbour Totoro. The four designs in the first set are: a Soot Sprite, the Catbus, and the Medium and Large Totoro. The stamps come with a cute case that clips shut, keeping them all neat and secure. On the front of the case is a sweet image of Totoro holding an umbrella, recalling a memorable moment from the film, with a little frog by his side to keep him company. The second My Neighbour Totoro Mini Mini Stamp set contains four different stamps. This collection has all three Totoros — Small, Medium and Large — and an acorn, their object of affection. ▼ The case features Totoro on his own, recalling the logo of the studio. ▼ The third set is dedicated to Kiki's Delivery Service. The stamps here are based around Jiji, with two images of the cat, along with its paw print and Kiki's red bow. ▼ The final set contains characters from Spirited Away. The four stamps cover five characters: No Face, Yubaba, a Soot Sprite, and baby Boh and Yubaba's bird, in their mouse and fly forms. As you might expect, the stamp for No Face is a deep jet black… ▼ …and he appears on the front of the case as well. The stamps are all self-inking and can be used anywhere you want to sprinkle a little Ghibli magic, with calendars and diaries being ideal surfaces for stamping. The stamps can be purchased at Donguri Kyowakoku stores and online, thanks to a recent restock, and are priced at 1,815 yen (US$12.65) each. Studio Ghibli releases cute 'bean letter' uchiwa fans in three anime movie designs
Totoro is just one of the popular characters ready to keep you cool this summer. Japanese summers are unbearably hot, and one of the ways to deal with the heat is with an uchiwa, a flat handheld fan that's been used here for over a thousand years . Now, Studio Ghibli is keeping the uchiwa tradition alive with a product called 'Take Uchiwa Mame Dayori' ('Bamboo Uchiwa Bean Letter'), which comes in three anime movie designs. With 'mame dayori' describing a mini-sized letter set or message card, these uchiwa double as fans and cards on which to write a short message, acting as a thoughtful summer gift for family and friends. Summer is a time for sending gifts and cards in Japan, and these fans are packaged in a set that has everything you need to put a smile on someone's face. The first set features the three Totoros — small, medium and large — from My Neighbour Totoro, with cooling bamboo leaves and watermelon, a fruit that's intrinsically tied to summer in Japan, where it's often split with a bat on beaches as part of a blindfolded game called 'suikawari' ('watermelon splitting'). The set includes a fan, which measures 12.5 centimetres (4.9 inches) across and 19.5 centimetres in height, and an envelope to send it in. The fan doesn't have to be placed in an envelope, however, as it can also be sent as a postcard by simply attaching a stamp to it. ▼ The second mini fan in the series is dedicated to Kiki's Delivery Service, in a sweet 'Lemon' design. The citrus design serves to keep us cool in the heat, while black cat Jiji looks to be reminding us of a popular saying: ▼ When life gives you lemons, you can always make lemonade. ▼ The third variety, 'No Face and Shoji Screen' is one for fans of Spirited Away. The background design on the envelope cleverly recalls the watery scene surrounding the bathhouse in the movie, where No Face travels with main character Chihiro on the train. These small gifts are a beautiful way to share a warm gesture with your loved ones during the heat of summer, but if you're anything like us, you'll be buying all three for yourself too. Priced at 770 yen (US$5.36) each, the fans can be purchased at Donguri Kyowakoku stores and online (links below) while stocks last.
