Ayesha Curry, Chef Lorena Garcia and More Join No Kid Hungry to Help End Summer Hunger for Kids
Meal pick-up and delivery in rural communities and a summer grocery benefit means transformative solutions to tackle summer hunger – 31 million children could benefit [Media: For Photos & Assets, Click HERE ] WASHINGTON, June 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Summer should be one of the best times of year for kids, but far too many families struggle to replace the meals served at school, making it the hungriest time of year for many children. That's why No Kid Hungry, a national campaign to end childhood hunger in America, is teaming up with big and trusted voices to drive awareness of new resources available to help feed kids this summer. Joining the effort are Co-Founder of Eat. Learn. Play. Ayesha Curry; Chef, Author, Restaurateur and TV Personality Lorena Garcia; Actress, TV Host and former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres and Actor and Producer Eugenio Derbez. They are recording public service announcements, amplifying on social media and more to promote No Kid Hungry's summer resource hub with information on how families can access programs to help feed their kids during the summer. Parents and caregivers can visit or to learn more. 'When kids have access to three meals a day, every day, they can dream big and have a bright future,' said Ayesha Curry, co-founder of Eat. Learn. Play. 'Nutrition programs are a powerful tool to combat hunger. That's why I'm proud to partner with No Kid Hungry through our Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation to help expand these programs and ensure families in Oakland and across the country know there are more options to help feed their kids this summer.' Due to bipartisan legislation in 2022, long advocated for by No Kid Hungry and others, rural communities, often impacted by transportation barriers, can now serve meals to kids by offering meal delivery or pick-up services. In addition, a permanent grocery benefit program called Summer EBT or SUN Bucks, provides eligible families in most states with an extra $120 for each school-aged child to help with grocery costs over the summer months. This year, 37 states, Washington DC, 5 territories, and 5 Tribal nations plan to offer Summer EBT. 'Food is more than nourishment, it is a source of joy, connection and community,' said Lorena Garcia, chef, author, restaurateur and TV personality. 'As a chef, I know every meal counts, especially for kids. That's why I'm thrilled to join No Kid Hungry once again and do my part so that every child has the joyful summer they deserve.' Before the new programs, only 2.8 million kids were accessing summer meals. In 2024, its first year of implementation, preliminary data shows that Summer EBT reached more than 18 million kids. With an estimated 13 million more kids to go, No Kid Hungry is working to expand Summer EBT to all 50 states in future years and providing grant funding to ensure rural summer meals options successfully reach more communities and that both programs reach as many kids as possible. Together, the new programs could help as many as 31 million children in the U.S. No Kid Hungry is proud to work with corporate partners like Arby's Foundation, Dollar Tree, HelloFresh, Tropical Smoothie Cafe and Williams-Sonoma, Inc. to help ensure kids have access to the healthy meals they need during the summer months and all year long. About No Kid Hungry No child should go hungry in America. But millions of kids in the United States live with hunger. No Kid Hungry is working to end childhood hunger by helping launch and improve programs that give all kids the healthy food they need to thrive. This is a problem we know how to solve. Beaufort County Schools receives grant for summer lunches
BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — Beaufort County Schools recently received a $20,500 grant from No Kid Hungry to support summer school lunch programs. This initiative, already in place within the district, will benefit from the funding by adding an extra vehicle to help deliver meals to students during the summer months. With school lunches on the mind, second-graders at John Cotten Tayloe School recently participated in a Farm Day event. The students rotated through four educational stations: one where they planted watermelon seeds to take home, another where they learned about dairy farming and milking cows, a tractor ride, and a session focused on local produce from Eastern North Carolina. 'You can't beat eating local—it works for the farmers, and it works for us,' Director of School Nutrition for Beaufort County Schools Joanne Kirven said. 'Very often nowadays, there's a lot of poverty around. Many children might not have experienced some of these things at home.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Morgantown holds Knit-a-thon to fight against hunger
MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — Across the country, knitters, crocheters and other crafters used their skills for a cause on Saturday to combat hunger, and this was the first year for a Morgantown group to join in on the fun. Organizers said 100% of the Knit-a-Thon's proceeds go to Feeding America, World Central Kitchen, No Kid Hungry and Meals on Wheels. Dozens of groups across the country came together to participate. This year marks the Morgantown group's inaugural year in the event as the Morgantown Knit for Food Knit-a-thon & Craft day where, in addition to online fundraising, it also collected non-perishable food items to donate to local food pantries. About 30 people participated in the local knit-a-thon by Saturday afternoon, where the two main items crafted were 'Knitted Knockers', or knit prosthetics for breast cancer survivors, and crocheted soap sacks for unhoused folks and local charities. About 40 soap sacks and more than 50 pairs of knockers had been made by Saturday afternoon. Upshur County Public Library hosts Plant & Prosper event Morgantown Knit for Food knit-a-thon organizer Chelle Adams was happy to see so many participate. 'The community of knitters, we have a very active group and just sharing in service artistry,' Adams said. 'We are exceeding our goal times two, we had a thousand dollar goal and we've almost reached $2,000.' Adams said she wanted to create the group since there was only one north of Pittsburg and another one in Charleston, with none in the north central West Virginia community. The knit-a-thon will continue until 10 p.m. Saturday. If you'd like to stop at the Morgantown group, you can find them crafting away at the Ascend WV building, located in 1279 University Avenue in Morganton. Your ticket to get inside is a non-perishable food item. To learn more about Knitted Knockers and how you can get involved, you can go here. To learn more about the Knit-a-thon, you can go here. New Research from HelloFresh Sounds the Alarm on Rising Student Hunger Ahead of Spring Break
HelloFresh and No Kid Hungry team up to feed students, raise awareness of childhood food insecurity and release important research from those on the frontlines of student hunger with No Breaks for Hunger campaign NEW YORK, March 17, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HelloFresh, the world's leading meal kit provider, and No Kid Hungry, a campaign focused on ending childhood hunger, announced today striking new research from America's teachers and a new campaign, called No Breaks for Hunger, to raise awareness of and help address the urgent issue of student hunger, especially during school breaks. For many kids across the US, March and April mark spring break—a time that should be reserved for fun and a much-deserved break from learning. However, for a staggering number of kids who rely on in-school meals, school breaks are characterized by worry over where their next meal is coming from. This issue is particularly urgent for the nearly 14 million kids who live in households facing food insecurity, meaning they do not have access to enough food for every family member to lead a healthy life. Teachers are on the front lines of the fight against childhood hunger, helping students get access to food and referring families to resources. Far too often, they witness the devastating effects of hunger on students firsthand, such as difficulty concentrating and lower academic performance. Recognizing that K-12 teachers have unique insights into the issue of childhood hunger, HelloFresh commissioned Hunger Matters for Students, a nationally representative survey of American teachers. Key findings include: Teachers regularly see kids come to school hungry: Nearly eight in 10 (78%) teachers said they were concerned about food insecurity in the communities where they teach. Three in five teachers (61%) know firsthand that their students are experiencing hunger, with more than half (54%) seeing kids come to school hungry a few times a week or more. Many teachers worry about their students' ability to access nutritious meals when they are not in school: Nine out of 10 teachers (89%) are concerned about students generally having enough to eat during school breaks. And nearly three-quarters (74%) said that, during school breaks, they worry about their student's ability to access nutritious meals specifically. Most teachers have personally taken action to address student hunger: Almost all (92%) of teachers have taken steps to address the problem of their students' hunger. Almost half (49%) personally provide students with food in the classroom, and more than one-quarter (29%) have bought food for students to eat outside of the classroom. Among these teachers, 78% have spent up to $100 per month of their own money. The majority of teachers would like action to be taken: 85% of teachers agreed they would like to see more done about the current state of hunger for K-12 students. "With the rising cost of everyday essentials, like rent and food, it's evident that many families are struggling—and that means their kids are too," said Jeffrey Yorzyk, senior director of sustainability at HelloFresh. "These troubling insights from America's teachers make one thing clear: It's time to act with urgency. That's why we're proud to continue our partnership with No Kid Hungry to address this serious and growing issue and do our part to help kids to thrive in school and at home." This spring break, HelloFresh is taking action to support the teachers who are going above and beyond to help their hungry students and to ease the burden placed on these students' families during school breaks. In partnership with local nonprofits and public school districts, HelloFresh will support students and families with free meal kits featuring wholesome, family-friendly recipes ahead of spring break in Brooklyn, NY; Newark, NJ; and Buckeye, AZ. Nationwide, HelloFresh is encouraging families to apply for LimeAid grants, which offer 12 weeks of free meal kits. Because teachers see the impact of hunger firsthand, HelloFresh also is calling on educators to nominate students' families in need and, in turn, enter for a chance to win a gift card for classroom supplies and resources. "Teachers are sounding the alarm; the current state of child hunger is unacceptable," said Allison Shuffield, managing director of corporate partnerships at Share Our Strength, the organization behind the No Kid Hungry campaign. "These findings really show the extent of the child hunger crisis in America and how it's keeping kids from reaching their full potential. With the support of partners like HelloFresh, we are committed to working across sectors to strengthen and protect programs that ensure kids get the nutrition they need all year round." Last year, HelloFresh and No Kid Hungry worked together to address the summer hunger gap through the 13 for 13 Million campaign, an effort to raise awareness of the issue and provide critical support to parents and families in need. With the help of trusted partners, HelloFresh hosted distribution events and pop-up pantries in 13 regions across the country and pointed families to critical resources, like summer EBT benefits.
