‘D-Day for Democracy' rally to be held Saturday in Peoria

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Hundreds of coordinated demonstrations pushing back against President Trump and his agenda are set to take place coast to coast on Saturday, including here in Central Illinois. The 'D-Day for Democracy' rally is the fifth mass rally organized by 50501, a grassroots national movement opposing the policies and practices of the second Trump administration. Organizers with the Peoria chapter of 50501 said their goal is to build a movement that cannot be ignored by elected officials. 'Our democracy is under threat by an authoritarian regime in Washington. As we see it, they have abrogated rights. They're not following court orders. They're essentially trying to empower themselves at the expense of the American people. This is a chance to both honor individuals who have fought for democracy in the past and to mobilize those who want to fight for democracy right now,' said Jim Haptonstahl, who is part of the Peoria chapter's leadership team. The date of the rally comes one day after the 81st anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of Normandy Beach in France by Allied troops in World War II. For the organizers, this moment harkens back to that time when democracy triumphed over autocracy. 'We picked a Saturday when it was best for us to get to the crowd that we would like and to essentially celebrate that moment, but also call into people's attention the reality we face right now,' explained Haptonstahl. While the group is vocal in its opposition to Trump, Haptonstahl said the movement is meant to be inclusive and open to all who support democratic institutions. 'We understand there are differences of opinion, and we want to assure them that we want to have a big tent welcoming to a diverse group of people who may have views that aren't exactly alike amongst them. But in the end, what we share is an absolute commitment to democratic institutions being preserved,' he said. 'People may disagree with some of the fundamentals we have to say, but we believe once they join us, they'll see that we are a welcoming group.' 50501 previously coordinated nationwide 'No Kings' demonstrations on Feb. 5, Feb. 17, and March 4. They were also one of the lead organizers for the 'Hands Off' demonstrations on April 5, drawing an estimated three to five million people in 1,400 events. 'D-Day for Democracy' rally is from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at Peoria Stadium. Organizers said it's a peaceful event, and no violence will be tolerated. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Will the 'No Kings' anti-Trump rally be in Savannah? Here are the 22 cities hosting protest

June 14 is set to be a busy day with Flag Day, President Donald Trump's birthday, and now 'No Kings' Day. This is a nationwide movement against Trump and his upcoming military parade, with events in Georgia and the rest of the U.S. Here's what we know: Trump is planning a lavish military parade on June 14 which marks the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary and is Trump's 79th birthday. It will include 7,500 troops, 120 vehicles, 50 aircraft on the streets and in the skies of Washington, D.C. According to a planning document seen by USA Today, the parade and a series of related events in D.C. beginning next week will cost up to $45 million. The public perception around this parade has been incredibly mixed. While some view this as a show of strength or national pride, Markus Schiller, the CEO of a German aerospace and security company, echoed what many of Trump's opponents feel: "There's definitely a correlation between putting on a military parade and authoritarian parades are about sending message to other countries and also to domestic political rivals." 'No Kings' describes itself as a nationwide day of defiance by multiple groups including Indivisible, 50501, and Stand Up America. "The flag doesn't belong to Donald Trump. It belongs to us. We're not watching history happen. We're making it," organizers said on the No Kings website. "On June 14th, we're showing up everywhere he isn't—to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings." Each event will look different depending on who is organizing it. Some may be simply flag-waving rallies, while others will be marches or full-on sign-waving protests. Swalwell says Dems must embrace ‘new tactics' to challenge Trump

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) says there's definite 'room for improvement' when it comes to efforts by Democratic leadership to push back against President Trump. 'We're seeing, I would say, all of our colleagues are stepping up and recognizing that this is not, to the voters, an approach of 'Are you far left or center-left?' It's more, 'Are you bringing old tactics to this challenge or are you bringing new tactics?'' Swalwell said Wednesday in an interview with The Hill when asked how he would grade the job that Democratic leaders are doing in their efforts to challenge the president. 'We have room for improvement,' he said. 'Old tactics would be sending an eight-page strongly worded letter to the administration,' Swalwell said. Last month, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) touted a 'very strong letter' that he and other top Democrats penned and sent to Trump to oppose the cancellation of billions of dollars in federal funding for Harvard University. 'New tactics would be using everything we have inside the House procedurally to stop Donald Trump,' Swalwell said, noting a nationwide 'No Kings' rally on June 14 and town halls hosted by Democrats in GOP districts. 'Are you willing to recognize this is not a 20th century challenge? This is an existential threat to democracy,' Swalwell, an executive producer of the new film, 'Words of War,' added. 'It's either revealing who should lead or who should leave,' he said. Pressed on what letter grade he might give his Democratic colleagues in Congress, Swalwell said, 'I'm not a teacher.' 'I put my helmet on. I'm back out on the field,' he said. 'I think people will judge me as doing everything I can right now to make sure that we get through, and have the muscle, and the vision to survive this greatest threat to democracy in my lifetime.' What is ‘No Kings Day': Protests planned across US to oppose parade on Trump's birthday

AP file photo Massive 'No Kings' protest expected to rain on Donald Trump's (military) parade Activists across the United States are preparing for a major protest on 14 June, which marks both Flag Day and president Donald Trump's birthday. The target is a large military parade the Trump administration is planning, described by the president as a 'big, beautiful' tribute to the 'No Kings' coalition is leading the opposition. The group argues that the parade is less about patriotism and more about Trump. 'It's a made-for-TV display of dominance for his birthday,' the group said in a public statement, reported Newsweek. Joined by Black Voters Matter and the Declaration for American Democracy, the coalition is calling for decentralised protests across more than 30 states. Their message is simple, 'No thrones, no crowns, no kings. ' 'Real power isn't staged in Washington,' said the organisers. 'It rises up everywhere else.'According to planning documents obtained by the Associated Press, the parade will include over 6,600 soldiers, at least 150 military vehicles, 50 helicopters, and seven bands. Around 2,000 civilians may also participate. Trump has defended the costs—estimated at $45 million—saying, 'That's peanuts compared to the value of doing it.'Trump insists the event is about Flag Day, not his birthday. 'It's a very important day,' he told NBC News. 'We have the greatest weapons in the world. And we're going to celebrate it.'Army spokesperson Colonel Dave Butler supported the idea, saying a parade could help Americans 'know their Army and their soldiers.'Law enforcement in Washington, DC, is already preparing for heightened security. Activists and supporters alike are using social media to rally crowds, making 14 June a likely flashpoint.
