Bell: Albertans waiting — is Carney going to screw us over this week?

The question. A simple question. Easy to answer if you're not playing games. Article content Easy to answer if your words have any meaning. Article content Prime Minister Mark Carney will roll out his plans for the country Tuesday. King Charles III will read the script. Article content Ottawa insiders expect it to be mostly high-minded words. Article content Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she will be listening. Article content Article content She told me right after Tim Hodgson, Carney's energy czar and self-styled prairie boy, spoke to business types in Calgary last Friday and said he was on their side and he would be their voice and he would be Alberta's voice. Article content Article content Hodgson didn't take any questions from the press. After all, if you get questions you have to provide answers and if the answers are the usual B.S. you will be called out. Article content Anyway, Smith did not see clear evidence of a change of heart. Article content Smith has heard plenty of words from Liberals. She has heard the talking out of both sides of the mouth, the message tailored to the audience at the time, the sweet nothings. Article content She wants to hear commitments. Something solid. Something real and spelled out in black and white. Article content Something you can show people with money who want to invest in Alberta. Something they can bank on. Article content She wants Carney to blow away the Trudeau Liberal laws and regulations and policies holding back higher oil and gas production and wants action within weeks, within a few months. Article content Article content The No More Pipelines law. The emissions cap on oil and gas. The net-zero electricity regulations. The tanker ban off the west coast of B.C. Article content Article content Gone.

Bell: Albertans will get a vote on Alberta independence — bet on it, baby!

Article content There will be a vote by Albertans on Alberta independence. Everyone who has their ear to the ground agrees. They say you can bet the farm on it. And just the fact there is an almost-certain vote on Alberta independence looming on the horizon will be a message heard across the country and right into the office of Prime Minister Mark Carney. Article content You see, under changes being brought in by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, the question of Alberta independence from Canada will be put to a vote of Albertans if the following happens. Article content If a total of 177,000 Albertans, names gathered over 120 days, say they want Albertans to have their say on Alberta independence in a referendum vote. Smith setting the magic number at 177,000 hasn't even been passed by the legislature yet, the federal election just wrapped up this week and the Alberta Prosperity Project, as of Thursday afternoon, already has 126,000 people pledging to back a vote. Article content Article content Not that long ago, the self-styled smart set thought this Alberta independence thing was merely supported by some crazy dudes guzzling wobbly pops in the back forty. It was the fringe of the fringe of the fringe of the province. Self-appointed serious people laughed the whole matter off. Dismissed it as idiotic. Not possible. Looney tunes. The usual whining. Hot air. Bluffing by blowhards. Big hat, no cattle. Now it looks like that same self-styled smart set are beginning to show signs of nervousness. We haven't seen this crowd this antsy since they figured U.S. President Donald Trump might send in the Marines to invade Canada and we needed 'Big Daddy' Mark Carney to save us. Premier Smith is now called a separatist by the Alberta NDP though she says all she wants is a much better deal for Alberta within Canada and believes votes on issues concerning Albertans is the purest form of democracy. Others say Smith is simply fanning the flames of separatism. Article content No doubt they feel Smith should be afraid of how Albertans might vote, though the premier points to a poll saying right now Albertans would vote No to independence. On Thursday, Smith says she will be speaking with Carney very soon. This week. Carney must have heard about this independence vote issue and can connect the dots, adding up to a royal pain in the neck he does not need. Alas, Carney is already backing the cap on oil and gas emissions. Bad. He does not want to deep-six the No More Pipelines law. Bad. When in Calgary, he would not commit to an oil and gas pipeline or LNG projects. Bad. Carney dismissed Smith's demands, how Ottawa should nix all the Liberal laws and regulations hurting Alberta. Bad. And the prime minister is surrounded by the very people responsible for screwing Alberta over the past 10 years. Real bad. How confident is Smith she can get through to Carney? 'It depends on whether we have pragmatic, Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney as prime minister or whether we have environmental extremist, keep it in the ground, phase out fossil fuels, author of the book Values Mark Carney as prime minister.'
