Former Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine cleared to run for mayor

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Former Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine said he is eligible to run for Mobile mayor after being cleared by a state agency. Nodine said he plans to officially launch his campaign next week. UPDATE: Wiley Street homicide victim killed by gunshot, police say Nodine pleaded guilty to harassment and perjury after the death of his mistress in May 2010. In a letter to Nodine dated Jan. 31, 2025, Joyce Williams of the Alabama Department of Pardons and Paroles stated that under Alabama law, 'your felony conviction does not involve moral turpitude and therefore does not disqualify you from exercising your right to vote.' To run for public office in Mobile, one has to be a resident and an eligible voter. Nodine also pleaded guilty in federal court to being a drug user in possession of a weapon. He served one year in federal prison for the offense. He said that federal conviction has no bearing on his ability to run for municipal office. To avoid a retrial, he pleaded guilty to harassment and perjury and spent two years in the Baldwin County Jail. Mobile County Commissioner Connie Hudson and former District Court Judge Spiro Cheriogotis are the only announced candidates for mayor. Sandy Stimpson announced last year that he would not run for a fourth term in office. Mobile's Municipal Election is on Aug. 26. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
