Beard reelected to Ward 3, Nolan secures first term in Ward 5

TUPELO — Voters returned Ward 3 Councilman Travis Beard to office in a low-turnout general election Tuesday night, along with electing freshman Republican Bentley Nolan to replace Ward 5 Councilman Buddy Palmer, to bring Tupelo's municipal election cycle to an end. The final tallies for the All-American City's municipal elections resolved quickly with two decisive victories, closing an election cycle that began in January and ended with a single new face on the council. Beard, a Republican who just secured his third full-term in office, defeated his Democrat opponent Shirley Hendrix, owner of R&B Specialty Printing, by garnering 192 votes (68%) to Hendrix's 139 votes (32%). Nolan, who manages Nolan Brothers Motor Sales, defeated Democrat Candria Lewis. Nolan received 292 votes (88%) to Lewis' 39 votes (10%). He will replace Palmer, who is retiring, on July 1 when all candidates will be sworn in. There were four write-in votes. Nolan previously defeated two candidates in the April 1 primary and April 23 runoff election to secure his seat as the Republican nominee. Beard and Nolan join the other candidates who either won in the primary election or ran unopposed. They include Republican Ward 1 Councilman Chad Mims, Republican Ward 2 Councilman Lynn Bryan, Democrat Ward 4 Councilwoman Nettie Davis, Republican Ward 6 Councilwoman Janet Gaston, Democrat Ward 7 Councilwoman Rosie Jones and Republican Mayor Todd Jordan. Mims and Gaston ran unopposed, while Bryan, Davis, Jones and Jordan had no opponents from opposing parties, leading to victories during the April 1 primary election.

Municipal absentee voting runs through Saturday

TUPELO — With a pair of races yet to be decided in Tupelo's municipal elections, the final day for absentee voting will run through the end of this month. May 31 at noon will be the last chance to vote via absentee ballot in Tupelo's municipal elections, which will decide who will represent Ward 3 and Ward 5. The general election is June 3. In Ward 3, incumbent Republican Travis Beard, a retired teacher, faces Democrat Shirley Hendrix, owner of R&B Specialty Printing. Beard is running for a third full term. Neither opponent had challengers during the April 1 primary elections, which secured their seats without need for voting. In Ward 5, Democrat Candria Lewis and Republican Bentley Nolan are both vying for the seat incumbent Republican Councilman Buddy Palmer will vacate in July. Nolan, the manager of Nolan Brothers Motor Sales, defeated two Republican opponents in an April 1 primary and April 22 runoff election. Lewis faced no Democratic opponents in the primary. Absentee voting in municipal elections follows the same guidelines as those of general elections. Those who qualify for absentee voting include individuals staying outside of their primary residence, such as university students, and teachers of any grade; individuals who will be out of town on Election Day; the parent or spouse of someone with a temporary or permanent physical disability who is hospitalized at least 50 miles away from their primary residence or otherwise cannot vote on Election Day; any individual over the age of 65; congressional delegates and their spouses; and people working at the times polls are open. Tupelo City Hall is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. While closed on Friday, City Hall will be open Saturday, May 31, from 8 a.m. until noon, to accommodate last-minute absentee voters. That will be the final chance to vote absentee.

Ward 5 runoff election today

TUPELO — Voters in Tupelo's Ward 5 have their chance to shape the future of the city today as two Republican candidates battle it out for a chance to compete in the upcoming general election through a runoff election. Republicans Steven Coon and Bentley Nolan are each vying to replace current Ward 5 Councilman Buddy Palmer. The two first faced each other in an indecisive April 1 primary election. Polls in Ward 5 are open today from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Nolan, the manager of Nolan Brothers Motor Sales, edged out Coon, an engineer at Tiffin Motorhomes, in the primary but failed to capture a majority of votes. The winner of today's runoff will move on to the June 3 general election, where he'll face Democrat Candria Lewis for a chance to replace Palmer, a longtime member of the city council who did not seek reelection. In the primary election earlier this month, Nolan received 261 votes, which totals 47% of the total number of votes cast. Coon received 36% of the votes while their opponent Mike Horton got 16%. The lack of a majority sparked the runoff between the Top 2 candidates. Ward 5 was the only race that was undecided in the original primary election. There are 3,140 registered voters in Ward 5 and only 559 people voted in the primary election earlier this month, which comes out to close to 18% turnout. The election, meanwhile, only saw just under 15% turnout citywide. The winner will face Democrat Candria Lewis in the June 3 general election. One other race will be decided in the general election: Ward 3. Incumbent Republican Travis Beard will face Democrat opponent Shirley Hendrix. Neither candidate had an opponent in the primary.
